A Rigorous Scientific Look Into The 'Fox News Effect'

In 2012, a Fairleigh Dickinson University survey reported that Fox News viewers were less informed about current events than people who didn't follow the news at all. The survey had asked current events questions like "Which party has the most seats in the House of Representatives?" and also asked what source of news people followed. The Fox viewers' current events scores were in the basement. This finding was immediately trumpeted by the liberal media—by Fox, not so much—and has since become known as the Fox News effect. It conjures the image of Fox News as a black hole that sucks facts out of viewers' heads.

Fox News viewers scored the lowest of over 30 popular news sources (though Fox viewers did at least score better than those saying they didn't follow the news). The chart’s horizontal black lines with tick marks indicate the margins of statistical error. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, a news satire, had the best-informed viewers.

All one has to do is look at how question K1 on page 3 is worded to know the whole poll of 612 people in New Jersey is bullshit. This question is the lead off one for the poll and allows multiple answers.

Americans now have more ways than ever before to get their news about politics and world affairs. I’m
going to read you a list of news sources. As I read the list, just say “yes” if you got news from that source any
time in the past week.

It also relies heavily on landline telephone meaning that the sample is going to be skewed badly in any case.

I was in a hotel awhile back and as I haven't watched cable news in decades I decided to give Fox News a look just to see what the draw was for so many ignorant racists. Only took a few minutes to hear so much batshit crazy bullshit that I wanted to both laugh at the absurdity that anyone take them seriously and lamenting the downfall of America because a hell of a lot of Americans actually do.

The batshit crazy bullshit is YOURS, and so is the racism.

No. I am simply pointing out your inversion fallacy.
I don't watch FOX.

My fallacy being that there is no correlation between the number of Americans who watch Fox News, believe their bullshit AND cause this country great harm with it? We see it every day. As I said, just turn the channel on and watch it for as long as you can tolerate it.

Sure, on Fox its just constant, "watch out! The Mexicans and blacks are coming to get you to arm up, buddy boys", 24/7.

They just oughta call it, "fear and hate tv".

What a stupid-ass OP.

All news comes from either AP or Reuter's and the networks ALL take all the same articles and put their little spins on them.

CBS, C-SPAN, and ABC are the "best", and then "FOX", and then NBC, CNN, MSNBC...etc..

Yeah, you are correct, TA...that's the reason the poll showed that FOX viewers are less informed about current events than people who don't follow the news at all. That plus the fact that the people who watch FOX are American conservatives...and American conservatives are fucking morons.

One of the biggest misconceptions of Fox viewers (besides The Big Lie) is that the mainstream news is 'fake.'

It is remarkable that Fox viewers are so gullible to fall for such lies. Lies are all the right has to captivate followers.

I bet a majority of them think there really is a 'deep state,' and that Democrats are so devious they would knowingly falsely impeach Trump - twice.

Facts don't stand a chance with that crowd when those facts have to surmount their hatred of liberals.

They used to carry on about how Putin wasn't so bad. Huh! We don't hear much of that anymore.

But of course, that shocker was really only because Trump was so soft on Russia.

If Trump told them something they would believe it, even if Trump had previously told them the opposite.

Trump told thousands of them to attack the Capitol, so they blindly did it.

It was the culmination of government hatred.

The right: Emotion heavy, fact light. Powered by rumor.
