America Has a Free Speech Problem

First of all, free speech means expressing your opinions without getting arrested. That's it.
Nobody is required to share his/her forum with you if he/she chooses not to.
Nobody will stop you from using your own forum if you have one.

Also, I may be one of the furthest left participants on this forum, at least in terms of economic politics,
and I'm not even the slightest bit "woke."
I think my "woke" fellow leftists are totally destructive to the cause of getting important progressive initiatives done.
Making sure that nobody ever feels a little bit uncomfortable is NOT one of those important issues.

Still, being excluded from a forum owned by somebody else, for whatever the reason, even if totally arbitrary,
has nothing to do with the 1st Amendment. Nothing at all.

YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO NOT HAVE YOUR SHITTY OPINION ATTACKED AND INSULTED.

politics needs to be openly and honestly debated

So when are you going to be open and honest?

Because in the nearly 4 years I've been on JPP, you haven't been honest about anything.

Like this:

I didn't ask for a mail in, I would have never known it was sent except my Russian neighbor
( who values American democracy more then most Americans) was kind enough to bring it over
return postage paid envelope included.. what could possibly go wrong?? :palm:

Would you agree that this Op-Ed from the NYT is a load of horseshit, given this is the thesis statement:

"the right to speak their minds and voice their opinions in public without fear of being shamed or shunned"

That is not a right at all.

No one has that right.

I don't think that was worded properly. The entire editorial is not a defense of ignoring what others say.

The political left and the right are caught in a destructive loop of condemnation and recrimination around “cancel culture.”

Many on the left refuse to acknowledge that cancel culture exists at all, believing that those who complain about it are offering cover for bigots to peddle hate speech.

Many on the right, for all their braying about cancel culture, have embraced an even more extreme version of censoriousness as a bulwark against a rapidly changing society, with laws that would ban books, stifle teachers and discourage open discussion in classrooms.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/18/opinion/cancel-culture-free-speech-poll.html

Fake News.

There is no law banning any book.
There is no law stifling teachers from teaching the subjects required in school.
There is no law discouraging open discussion in classrooms.

Woke preaching is not teaching. It is preaching. It does not belong in a school. It belongs in a religious setting.

The 1st amendment only applies to Congress. It does not apply to the States. The States can do what they want, according to their own constitutions.

Cancel culture and the Woke mentality IS hate speech. It is racism.

"The Times Opinion/Siena College poll found that 46 percent of respondents said they felt less free to talk about politics compared to a decade ago. Thirty percent said they felt the same. Only 21 percent of people reported feeling freer, even though in the past decade there was a vast expansion of voices in the public square through social media."

Polls are completely meaningless. Argument from randU fallacy.

Thank the PHONY media, the liberal left and the Democratic Party of the Lying Jackass for that. :palm:

And you think you're expressed hatred for Democrats, Liberals, Biden, and the media has anymore significance or influence here in the forum on or with other formum members- than that of a little desert rat chasing his own tail in the desert while attracting the bite of a snake?

If you think you are being successful here with your line of BULLSHIT, you should just go ahead and reward yourself with a little friendly self reach around!

I'll assure you- MOST PEOPLE JUST SEE YOU AS A USELESS TRUMP-SUPPORTING ASSHOLE LOST IN THE DOLDRUMS OF A LOST CAUSE!

It goes far beyond conservative states yanking books about race and sex from public school libraries. Since 2021, 175 different bills have been introduced or pre-filed in 40 state legislatures which target what teachers can say and what students can learn, often with severe penalties. Of those, 13 have become law in 11 states and 106 are still under consideration. All told, 99 bills currently target K-12 public schools, 44 target higher education and 59 included punishment for violators.

Yanking books about race and sex from a school library is not banning books, dumbass

The editorial seems to be saying that there's an inherent right to not have your shitty opinions and beliefs challenged publicly.

I read the whole editorial and don't think that is the conclusion, though your objection has legitimacy. Here is their conclusion:

"Free speech is predicated on mutual respect — that of people for one another and of a government for the people it serves. Every day, in communities across the country, Americans must speak to one another freely to refine and improve the elements of our social contract: What do we owe the most vulnerable in our neighborhoods? What conduct should we expect from public servants? What ideas are so essential to understanding American democracy that they should be taught in schools? When public discourse in America is narrowed, it becomes harder to answer these and the many other urgent questions we face as a society."

That is, attack the argument, not the person.

Polls are completely meaningless.

Is that why you use one for your avatar ?

GAINESVILLE, FLA. (TND) — The University of Florida reportedly removed a dedication to Karl Marx after a Campus Reform report highlighted one of the university’s study rooms was named after him.
So?
Marx, the author of The Communist Manifesto, is considered to have laid the foundation for the rise of contemporary socialist and communist movements throughout the world.

https://abcnews4.com/news/nation-wo...-socialism-university-campus-reform-manifesto

Fake News. Marx didn't invent socialism. Communism is just a form of socialism. So is fascism. So is slavery. Marx just argued for it around the world, specifically counseling Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, and FDR.
Socialism itself has been around a LOT longer than Marx.

No...no, no, no...you cannot separate the person from the argument they are making. Politics IS personal.

Secondly, what you quoted reinforces the thesis they lay out at the start of the piece...so within the context of their broader argument, what you quoted simply reinforces a very, very tired and inaccurate reading of the national discourse.

What the NYT editorial staff is arguing is that they shouldn't face any scrutiny for reporting and publishing things that aren't true.

Absolutely disagree. There is the problem.

How can you separate the person from the argument they're making, when they argument they are making is personal!?!?

Are we not supposed to think someone's a bigot because they don't believe trans people should have rights?
