The editorial seems to be saying that there's an inherent right to not have your shitty opinions and beliefs challenged publicly.
There is no such right.
The editorial seems to be saying that there's an inherent right to not have your shitty opinions and beliefs challenged publicly.
I read the whole editorial and don't think that is the conclusion, though your objection has legitimacy. Here is their conclusion:
"Free speech is predicated on mutual respect — that of people for one another and of a government for the people it serves. Every day, in communities across the country, Americans must speak to one another freely to refine and improve the elements of our social contract: What do we owe the most vulnerable in our neighborhoods? What conduct should we expect from public servants? What ideas are so essential to understanding American democracy that they should be taught in schools? When public discourse in America is narrowed, it becomes harder to answer these and the many other urgent questions we face as a society."
That is, attack the argument, not the person.
And what makes you think I am angry? Even though I will admit- I AM SOMEWHAT ANGRY RIGHT NOW!
I just explained my view on Cancel Culture- that I think it is just a way to express hatred towards those one hates!
We never needed the term Cancel Culture- WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS FIND SOME WAY TO STOP ALL THE HATRED FOR OTHERS IN THIS COUNTRY!
WE ARE NOT THE united states anymore- we are closer to being the divided states- the divided nation.
Bulverism fallacy.No...no, no, no...you cannot separate the person from the argument they are making. Politics IS personal.
You don't get to speak for everyone. Omniscience fallacy.Secondly, what you quoted reinforces the thesis they lay out at the start of the piece...so within the context of their broader argument, what you quoted simply reinforces a very, very tired and inaccurate reading of the national discourse.
Which is simply BS. Just like anyone else, there are consequences for what you say. What the NYT editorial staff is arguing is that they shouldn't face any scrutiny for reporting and publishing things that aren't true.
How can you separate the person from the argument they're making, when they argument they are making is personal!?!?
Are we not supposed to think someone's a bigot because they don't believe trans people should have rights?
"Listen not to me, but the logos (reason)."--Heraclitus
If everything is opinion then there is no such thing as truth.
Does anyone here (regardless of what you personally think of him) think for a nanosecond, that someone like Donald Trump would be invited to speak at say UC Berkeley or Boston College? And if he were invited, would the audience applaud him like the students at Liberty University did Bernie Sanders?
I'd think there'd be days, possibly weeks, of violent rioting prior to his speech being announced. It'd likely be so bad that the event would have to be cancelled.
The problem of freedom of speech and it's being squelched isn't coming from the Right, but rather from the Left. Sure, there are those on the Right that want to ban books, or some forms of speech, but they aren't omnipresent and endemic like they are on the Left.
WE ARE NOT THE united states anymore- we are closer to being the divided states- the divided nation.
Trump is an incoherent, babbling moron. Why would a university invite him to speak?
I do not think we are divided as a country. I think there is a faction of the country that is fascistic and wants to overthrow our government by force. Unfortunately, the GOP is part of it.
Well, we are divided. About as divided as we can be. Americans live in two complete separate worlds, realities, histories, and set of facts!
You have the Trump Cult- And everybody else basically!
I do not believe that everybody else is the problem here in the United States!
Trump is an incoherent, babbling moron. Why would a university invite him to speak?
That isn't the point, but you do illustrate my point. You too cannot not even conceive of letting a Right winger speak at a Leftist university.
You finally figured this out??? The United States was destroyed during the silent coup by Democrats. That was when they installed Biden as Chief Puppet.
"The Times Opinion/Siena College poll found that 46 percent of respondents said they felt less free to talk about politics compared to a decade ago. Thirty percent said they felt the same. Only 21 percent of people reported feeling freer, even though in the past decade there was a vast expansion of voices in the public square through social media."
Hey we figured you racists would shit your britches over a Black Man becoming our president- or a Black woman becoming our VP!
WE WERE RIGHT! YOU RACIST MOTHERFUCKER'S STILL HAVE YOUR PANTIES IN A WAD OVER THAT!
Thanks for making this obvious to all!
You realize right that stupid cut couldn't even win her own state in the primary and pigment and pussy is why she has the job. You're too fucking stupid to talk to.
No! I do not! In fact, we do not vote for Vice Presidents!
Vice presidents are selected by the presidential candidates and if people don't like them- THEY MAY WANT TO VOTE FOR THE CANDIDATE THEY LIKE THE VICE PRESIDENT.
BUT IN THE 2020 ELECTION- BIDEN AND HARRIS WERE THE BEST TICKET ACCORDING TO THE VOCAL AND VOTING MAJORITY OF AMERICANS!
YOUR WEAKER AND LESS DESIRED CANDIDATES LOST!
NOT MINE!
HOW IS ALL THAT BUTTHURTEDNESS WORKING OUT FOR YOU NOW?
Aren't you just a sore loser now?
Do not lie about my post. Your inference is false and unjustified.

How do you figure that? You stated, Trump is an incoherent, babbling moron. Why would a university invite him to speak? You start off by insulting Trump and his ability to speak. Clearly, what you stated is hyperbole in that respect at best.
