American exceptionalism

Yeah, but damn. I feel like I'm watching the land and people that I love descend into an abyss of awful. Once we were admired and respected around the world. We're barely clinging on to that #1 thing these days. Our enemies are massed against us and our IMPOTUS is gleefully aiding them because all that POS cares about is himself and his shaky financial empire. Oh, and his spawn as long as they remain loyal. Your 20+ years of service to this country don't mean shit to him if you aren't joining in the praise.

Now you know how your parents felt in the 1960s. ;)

We'll be fine. Just gird yourself for more fatal clashes between the extremists.

I don't know - there was quite a good article in today's i (Independent) pointing to the very close resemblance to be found between Trumpf and his morons and Sadam Husain and the Baath Party in Iraq.

Or just like the Boers in South Africa

How so? The Boer Wars was where the British invented Concentration Camps.

There's a good movie on streaming titled "The Nightingale" showing how the Imperialist Brits treated citizens of Irish descent in Tasmania. Brutal, but interesting. It also touches the British genocide of natives titled "the Black War".

If anyone wonders why I give Brits so much shit when they claim their society is superior to America's, then I start listing things like this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_War
The Black War was the period of violent conflict between British colonists and Aboriginal Australians in Tasmania from the mid-1820s to 1832. The conflict, fought largely as a guerrilla war by both sides, claimed the lives of more than 200 European colonists and between 600 and 900 Aboriginal people, nearly annihilating the island's indigenous population.[2][3] The near-destruction of the Aboriginal Tasmanians, and the frequent incidence of mass killings, has sparked debate among historians over whether the Black War should be defined as an act of genocide.

Same thing, Trump is a wannabe, never an actuality.

FWIW, I'm going through a lot of popcorn watching national events unfold as we approach the Election and the almost 3 months to follow. :D

What's your prognosis on what the Corruption-in-Chief will do as a lame duck?

I can see how the Sixties would be relatively boring after that. Most Boomers thought it was a pretty big deal. :)

It was a decade of great cultural change, for sure. Civil rights, women's rights, the VN war protests, culminating in the creation of the EPA (1970) and Roe v Wade (73).

Change can come slowly through social evolution or more quickly through social revolution. The problem with revolution is it can't be controlled like social evolution since revolution is inherently unstable.

What we are seeing now is mostly social evolution. When it becomes more about the violence, it's more revolution. Trump is trying to light the fuse to a revolution so he can use Executive powers to crush it either by leaving the "insurrectionists" dead in the streets or rotting in jail. He doesn't care which as long as it happens.

Rant and rave. Congress, regardless who controls it, will control him.

Most likely you are right about that. I imagine he'll pardon everyone from Satan on down, issue a slew of EOs that President Biden will then reverse, and mope and moan and wail and weep. And try desperately to hide as much cash as he can.

The current situation with protests is actually far less violent than what both RW and mainstream media are portraying. Violence, fires, turmoil, unrest sells so is featured. Trump of course is fanning the flames in the hopes of diverting attention from the pandemic. Plus that's what he is -- a sociopathic instigator of division and hate.

ROFL. Agreed, I expect that will be in the cards for November and December. Most Presidents wait until January to start controversial actions, but I expect Trump will start on November 4th.

As for cash, he already has been stealing as much "silverware" as possible.. Trump is all about the money just like his favorite kids.

Agreed, which is why Trump keeps trying to hype it as being far worse than it is. The media is a business and just covering the controversy. Agreed violence sells as well as sex and controversy.

Who is your presidential candidate of choice this time around?

If it were just the men, then Biden, but it's not. It's about what major political party rules the US and what laws they'll jam down the throats of all Americans, including the half that didn't vote for them. I see no reason why Biden will be any different than Obama after being elected since the Democratic party is still run by the same people as then. For this reason, I'm voting Third Party.

The United States is also exceptional as a major / world power in that it has never been either a colonial power, imperialist, or conquering in the same way other great nations have been throughout history.
