So you are saying that if Pittsburgh didn’t make its research facilities available the March of Dimes was going to build him his own facilities?

Salk didn’t just come up with idea overnight, like any big discovery, there was a lot of preparatory research that preceded his vaccine. The Foundation and March of dimes didn’t just ask Salk from scratch to invent a vaccine, his prior work led to their attention. And I’d wager that both entires were also funding other efforts at other schools at the same time

My example is perfect an example of the need for University research

My first postdoc was with the USDA. One of the things we were told is that all of our patents were to be made either free or at reduced licensing rates to US farmers. What you had was several thousand university level researchers making far less than they would working for industry doing real science on your behalf and making it available for all.

There's no "private" system that could do that. Not even close. But all that research (now almost 2 centuries of it) has revolutionized agriculture and allowed billions of people to live.

And it only cost YOU a couple cents each year.

You are getting such a deal that you never hear about or even know about.

I'm saying that the funding came from a different source than the one you want folks to believe. Even after showing that, you pretend that the sources of funding was still the one you want it to be rather than the one that actually funded the research.

Your example is the perfect example of the need for more privately funded research.

Never denied the funding from other sources, rather, that Pittsburg provided the faculties for him to develop his vaccine to the point that those funding sources invested in him. He wasn’t just picked out randomly and funded to develop a vaccine, he had shown promise from what he researched while at Pittsburgh

Right, and Bill Gates' mother provided the garage from which Microsoft was born, but she didn't fund it. These are two different things.

The funding paid for the facilities, the employees, the equipment, etc. Providing space for them is not a magical moment of heroism and certainly doesn't tell me that we need University research, that's just you gaslighting folks because you wanted to believe that Salk's research was a "good example" of what you wanted it to be.

Tell the truth... once you realized that Salk wasn't funded by the University the bottom fell out of your argument but you don't want to admit what is right in front of your face...

It's okay to tell the truth, archives... It's okay for you to be wrong once in a while.

I don't have to. The article included nothing on the side making the cuts in it. Thus, it was one-sided and presented only half the picture. That is an accurate observation, and it makes the article far less impressive and valuable. Until we are told what and why the cuts were made by the other side, the whining of those facing their programs getting cut is virtually meaningless.

Neither did the “other side,” cuts are indiscriminate, supposedly Harvard is being cut 9 billion but hasn’t been told where, point being, research and researchers are on hold and confused, which alone could lead to a brain drain

University research leads to the majority discoveries, Salk didn’t begin his research in a vacuum, or his parents garage. What do you think was doing working at Pitt?

  • 1947: Salk became the director of the Virus Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

  • 1948: He began his work on polio, establishing a Virus Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh.

  • 1952-1955: Salk and his team researched and developed the polio vaccine.

  • 1954: The first large-scale national study of the vaccine was conducted.

  • 1955: Salk announced the discovery of a polio vaccine.

  • 1963: Salk became fellow and director of the Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, California, later called the Salk Institute.

I am not wrong, read the news, even today Trump is threatening Harvard with an 8 billion dollar cut, you don’t think that is going to have an effect on those individuals doing research at the school as to where their futures lie?
 
None of that changes that his funding for the study was not from the University. Not even a little bit.

And where did the University get the funds? And don’t tell us the March of Dimes

MIT, Ivy League schools, just about any major University conduct research funded by the Government, they are schools, their primary function is to educate students, the research is an extension but the schools need assistance to fund that research. Your local or smaller school don’t have research for a reason.

You keep missing a major point, with cutting this funding it puts those researching in limbo, which could lead to the brain drain discussed above

And the fact you have had to resort to the “leftist” do this, the “leftist” do that, reflects that you are beginning to fail on the exchange’s content

You are one of those people blessed enough to never have to work in R&D. You think these "inventions" and Innovations just happen because things. But it is because of the COMMON FUNDING that a nation of 300million people can bring to the table that makes these things YOU ENJOY EVERY SINGLE DAY and which ACTUALLY KEEP YOU ALIVE possible.

Individual funding can't touch the needs.
