Salk chose not to patent it, thus making it affordable. However folks manufacturing and selling it make profits. It just made it easier for them to do it without paying the high fees most universities charge.

The funding for Salk's vaccine was from a foundation created by the President and then funded by donations to the March of Dimes...

I get what you are saying, but that kind of funding would still be available. The University did not fund Salk's research.

It doesn't take patents to make profit. And Universities more often than not do take patents out.

Not always, but usually, companies buy the patents from the individuals who file the patents, and that usually is not the schools

But you are getting beyond the topic thread, it is hard to deny that most major research in nearly all fields begins at the University level, and to indiscriminately cut funding for this research will have consequences

Medicine is not a 'research' or 'study'. Drug companies conduct their own research for new drugs...and they should.
