neither are socialism.....socialism is an economic system wherein the government controls the means of production.......it is not social programs of assistance......

neither are socialism.....socialism is an economic system wherein the government controls the means of production.......it is not social programs of assistance......

British Petroleum prior to 1977 would be an example of socialism.......most businesses in China are controlled by the government which owns the majority of stock.......that is socialism.....switching to single payer health insurance would be socialism.....

Socialism does not exist. Countries that we pin that label to just give more of their countries wealth to healthcare, education, and public programs to help the masses. In America, we funnel that money to the top 1 percent. That is the path to oligarchy, not freedom and peace.
People in socialist" countries go to work as you do. Their products are sold across the globe. Did you ever hear of Volvo, Ikea, Electrolux, or play with a Rubik's cube? If you want to defend our system over theirs, do not use labels. Just admit you are at peace with us creating a fabulously wealthy class at the expense of the workers.

Agree. Unfortunately, liberals and conservatives have distorted the meaning today. Conservatives use the term to attack liberal social programs (even worse when they label something "communism").

But, my point is that if we are going to call government social programs like food stamps "socialist" so is Social Security. The fact that taxes are labeled separately does not change the nature of the program.

You mean countries we "mislabel" socialist. Norway keeps telling Bernie Sanders it is not socialist. Volvo, Ikea, Electrolux are all private companies (Volvo is owned by Geely Holding in China). Social welfare systems do not constitute socialism.

Socialist nations are like China and Cuba. Socialism is an integral part of communism but a country can be socialist without being communist. Even communist nations vary in their economic systems. It is almost true to say the only common characteristic of a communist nation is that it calls itself communist.

Those workers making Volvo and Ikea products also produce a wealthy class which is reduced somewhat by high taxes to pay for the social programs. Income inequality has been increasing in all the Nordic nations.

China is not socialist. They are the biggest industrial nation in the world ,except perhaps us for a while. They are capitalists like we once were.
Cuba has some strains of socialism, but a free and fair election would take it away.
China claims they are Communists, but that has been blended away by capitalism and greed.
Russia is a dictatorship.

While China has certainly moved more toward a market economy with more private ownership the government owned enterprises still constitute a major part of the economy (63% of total employment) and most of the largest enterprises.
If China is not socialist we cannot really call it communist, either (except in name only). The U. S. economy is more heavily capitalist than China.

Russia is a dictatorship, but so are China, Cuba, N. Korea, and most other nations. Dictatorship and communism are political systems while capitalism and socialism are economic systems.

State owned businesses are no less greedy than private businesses, they are just not called "profits."
