Best Album of The 80's

Desh, I pointedly excluded "Best-Of" albums, although, I should have pointed that out. If I'd included "best-Of" albums, it would be a subject of debate, whether bob Marley would win, but he'd easily be in the top 3-5. I doubt anyone would disagree.

As for "Men At Work" being "cheese". The album in question rates evaluation. Whether it makes the grade is another issue.

I skipped a lot of albums, simply because there are songs on the album that don't really rate. there are a lot of great songs of The 80's that cme from lackluster albums.

if we want to get into great songs of The 80's, I could mention dozens that have little to do with this list.

BTW, Cypress, I think Pornography is a better album than Disintegration.

Natalie Merchant...In My Tribe

I was in lust with Natalie Merchant from 16 onward. that album ALMOST rates, but not quite. Half of it is fantastic, and half of it is forgettable.

"The Final Cut" is closer than "A Momentary lapse of Reason". Don't get me wrong, I love most of AMLOR, but it isn't a great album in its entirety.

Gilmour did a great job, be he was never the whacked-out writing talent that Waters was.

I agree. That is why I mention them separately. They were two separate groups with the same name. Gilmour is a talented guitar player and songwriter, just not quite as amazingly twisted talented like Waters.

I would suggest that a "Best of the 80s" list, be limited to include just bands that truly were products of the 1980s. That's the way these lists traditionally work.

Pink Floyd is largely associated with the 1970s.

The Rolling Stones had a huge album in 1981 - Tatto You, but the Stones are really a 60s and 70s band. No one thinks of them as an 80s band.

Ohh In that case 80's music sucks.
Michael Jackson and Muskrat love and guys wearing flowerpots on their heads....

If you want to talk about "standing the test of time" one must look at U2 as well.

Bon Jovi is another that clearly has "stood the test of time", filling stadiums and returning to the recording studio regularly.

Also, one should look at more than just rock music. George Strait has also "stood the test of time".

Really? Personally, when I hear those old Bon Jovi songs, they sound a bit dated. They've got a little bit of that cheesy, metal hair-band vibe going on.

To me, I can put on any U2 or REM album from the 80s, and it sounds as fresh today, as it did back then. It doesn't sound dated, and there's not a whiff of cheese to the songs.

It doesn't change that it has "stood the test of time" that they really do have a huge following, filling stadiums and selling albums regularly. The group is still together doing what they used to....

I'm not saying that I think they are great, just that "stood the test of time" can be a very subjective thing.

You know which metal hair-band sounds really dated and cheesy today?

POISON. They sound horrible today. Cheese factor to "eleven". And back in the 80s everyone thought they were the bomb. ....Except me: I was into Iron Maiden and Motorhead ;)

OH yeah, Poison. What did they sing Cypress, I forget. There was one big song in particular, wasn't there?

I also never liked Poison or any hair bands. I always tease my wife because she admits to liking them in the 80s.

The power ballad is something I'm glad is left in the dustbin of history. Cheese to the extreme.
