When I was a kid, the washing machine had a single knob, and a button. There was no fine tuning adjustments. When I did construction, I had to wash my clothing two or three times just to get them clean. It was pathetic.

Now, there are over a hundred fine adjustments I can make in washing my clothing. The washing machines do a fantastic job in washing everything.

IF you can find a washer at all for $500 - it will last maybe a year - a day after the warranty expires.

On the Lowes site the 4th of July sale has washers ranging from $700 to $3,000.

I have a washer from 5 years ago, which I bought for $500, that is running fine. It replaced a similar washer I bought 10 years before that. I have a dryer from the pair that is still going after 15 years. Talking to everyone I know about this, and we all have washers and dryers that last from 10 to 20 years. Never heard of a washer that lasts for a year.

Yes, washers used to last for 30 or more years, but they also cost a lot more(inflation adjusted), and require expensive repair. They also did a terrible job.
