Foreign workers are leaving Britain at the fastest pace since World War II, presenting a challenge to an economy already roiled by Brexit and the coronavirus.

This exodus is not, of course, a separate problem from Brexit. Brexit was specifically designed to deter EU workers, with not a thought about how this might impact on our economic prospects.

And nor is it simply a matter of legal restrictions on freedom of movement. There's a vicious circle effect: by undermining the UK economy, Brexit has made this country a much less attractive prospect for workers who previously contributed to many sectors of this.

The UK has now resumed the proud position that we occupied prior to our EU membership: the sick man of Europe. And this time the sickness is not just economic.

From the behaviour of Boris Johnson's government, it must be hard for foreign observers not to conclude that we are now also profoundly sick in the head.

UK sends navy vessels to Jersey amid post-Brexit fishing row with France
Boris Johnson dispatches two patrol boats to protect island from feared blockade

Boris Johnson has dispatched two Royal Navy patrol boats to protect Jersey from a feared naval blockade by French fishing vessels, in an escalation of a dispute over post-Brexit access to waters around the Channel island.

The move followed talks on Wednesday evening between the prime minister and the chief minister of the British crown dependency, John Le Fondré, who had warned Downing Street of imminent movements by French fishing boats to cut off the island’s main port.

Jersey’s government had already been reeling from comments on Tuesday from France’s minister for maritime affairs, Annick Girardin, who had warned that the island’s electricity supply could be turned off in retaliation over a lack of access for the French fishing fleet to its waters.
