Cult movies

here are my picks for now:

Cidade de deus - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/
movie about children growing up in the slums of brazil, and becoming part of various drug gangs

Mulholland Drive - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166924/
One of my favorite David Lynch movies, I also think it's his most accessible.

Requiem for a Dream - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180093/
I don't like vouching for movies as (like everything else) taste in movies is very subjective. I vouch for this movie. It's about four people struggling with addiction of various forms.

I have not seen this movie (but I do own it) so I can't say if it's good or not. It doesn't actually have a very good imdb score, but a lot of people that like mind-fuck type movies fawn over this. A lot of people have said the score is low because it's just so hard to understand and that pisses people off. It's about time travel and apparently is very complex and technical.

I have a lot of other suggestions but I am not going to post them because A) I am not sure if you will enjoy them and B) I dont want to make an overwhelming list

Definitely. What a totally weird, off the wall trip. Fuckin weirdest movie I've ever seen. Way weirder than anything else out there. Nothing comes even close.

inland empire (also lynch) is way way weirder and off the wall.

Creativity is essentially nonsense filtered through logic. When someone puts too much nonsense in there without enough filtering it through logic, people are going to shy away from it, and others are going to say "Oh, but you just don't understand!". But that doesn't mean there's any deeper meaning. I doubt the author really intended any deeper meaning. He just didn't make his creativity sensible enough.

Never seen that one, but Revolver is a head fuck too. How do those two stack up?

Oh and how the fuck could I forget Clockwork Orange?

Did anybody mention Fight Club yet? Gotta have Fight Club. What about Natural Born Killers?

seems like we're getting beyond 'cult' films and into a genre that isn't really 'cult' but is thought of 'cult', due to the theme of the movie. fight club is mainstream in my opinion. natural born killers....possibly a cult movie. saw it in a theater and was blown away, no pun intended. never seen it since and have desire to watch it on dvd.

my understanding of cult is that it is a movie that was not widely watched it first came out. that is the key factor. it gathers audiences as time goes on....hence, it becomes a cult. fight club had a huge audience.

Yeah, I don't know how popular Fight Club was in the theaters, I never saw it until it was on DVD. Waterworld would be a "cult" flick then, but CaptBilly don't like Waterworld.

Red Dawn was definitely popular in theaters.

Dawn of the Dead (the first one) is likely a cult flick and funny as hell to boot. And Clockwork Orange is awesome me droogies...

Yeah, I thought so...

Fight Club opened 1st in its first weekend, but afterward dropped like a rock and it never even got close to expectations in theater earnings in North America. Its North American reception was deemed "underwhelming". It gained in popularity at its DVD stage and is now a phenomena unstoppable.

I'm not sure if the movie is philosophical. that's not what I meant by "did not understand it"

did you see the movie?

I didn't know Red Dawn was popular back then, but these days it's almost strictly a cult film.
