Those "assault weapons" were widely available before Columbine, the perpetrators of which didn't use any "assault weapons" anyway. And we don't have "old mobster movie-style shootings" because we ended Prohibition. A lot of our current homicide is due to the War on Drugs. We didn't seem to learn anything from Prohibition. And the assault weapon ban didn't have any noticeable effect on anything. It's pretty obvious that something besides guns is the real problem, but nobody wants to look for that. There are many countries with very strict gun laws that have far worse problems with guns than we've got. Gun control doesn't make things better.

On the subject of etymology, I noticed that the Welsh word for "night", "nos" is very similar to the Slavic (several languages) word for "night", "noc" (pronounced like English "notes").
