Personally, I am a real stickler on the point that gay/lesbian relations (ie, "civil unions") are NOT marriages, by definition, and because of that, I refuse to redefine the term marriage.

Marriage is the sacred union between a man and a woman, in which the two separate bodies join together into a single body (in spirit). If one is to believe in Christianity, Christianity believes that this union models the relationship between Jesus Christ (the "husband") and The Church (the "bride"). But even at a secular level, the child itself is an embodiment of this very definition of marriage, as the DNA of two separate bodies (the parents) joins together into a single body (the child).

Given that, I refuse to recognize a civil union as a marriage (ie, redefine the word marriage). They are two completely different things, as only heterosexual couples are able to procreate in principle.

Choosing not to have children does not alter the definition of marriage. The definition of marriage refers to the ability to procreate in principle, not the ability or desire to procreate in actuality. In my experiences of discussing this topic, people very often conflate 'actuality' with 'principle'.

Gay/Lesbian unions are NOT marriages, nor can they ever be, by definition, since gays/lesbians cannot procreate in principle.

"Heterosexual marriage" is redundant terminology. A marriage is ALWAYS about a heterosexual couple. There is no such thing as a "homosexual marriage". Those relations are called "civil unions".
