Florida Governor orders schools to drop standards for academic performance

Actually, not a bad idea, especially when Covid has disrupted education so, rather than one yearly evaluation coming at the end of the year, break it down into three ongoing standards to be met allowing for addressing shortcomings earlier

Will ReTrumplicans administer snake handling, vaccine denial and flat earth appreciation credits instead?

It's so "customizable" not to prove your kids know the three Rs

:palm:

That's a progressive thing he's doing. The teachers love it. Why is it you don't like this progressive policy?

Why not take a progress check several times and make some adjustments during the year instead waiting until the end when it's all over anyway? :dunno:

I think it's a good idea.

So you are claiming Desantis is a progressive? Do you think something that dumb will fly?

To graduate from HS, a student must be required to pass the GED. That will force the schools to actually teach. At least it will for a few years till the GED is dumbed down too.

Damn dude, and here you are telling me that I think in an all or nothing manner. Look in the mirror. Because one is a Democrat or Republican does not mean every single thing they do or support has to be liberal or conservative respectively. A Republican supporting a progressive position on an issue does not mean they are a liberal. A Democrat supporting a policy deemed conservative does not mean they are a political conservative.

I didn't read the article and have no clue if this is good policy or not, but God forbid someone in office try to implement good policy regardless of the label.

A GED is a replacement for graduating from high school, it is not the road to graduating from high school. It is in the name Graduation Equivalency Degree Test, not Graduation Test.

So you have Governor DeSantis and the Florida's Teacher Union in agreement that ending the standardized testing at the end of the year and replacing it with progress monitoring three times a year is a good thing.

Should people be worried that those two are on the same page or is it a good thing?

Kind of like the Trump approach to pandemic testing.

If you don't test, you won't know how bad it is, right?

And after all. Who wants to be in touch with reality when fantasy is so much better?

Huge win for Florida schools...teachers....parents....but mostly students...
Excellent news!!!

Why do you think the Florida Teachers Unions are behind this?

Did you support No Child Left Behind and all the standardized testing requirements that came with it?

When teachers complain we have too much standardize testing do you think they are living in a fantasy world as opposed to reality?

Apparently you only read the headline. Deeper in the story, a whole three paragraphs, he explains why. He has something BETTER. I wish you weren't a dishonest, uneducated hack. Really I do. :palm:

DeSantis said they will be replacing it with progress monitoring which many school districts are doing.

“This is short individualized check-in assessments three times per year. This will take hours not days to be able to do these assessments. It has three different opportunities, fall, winter, and spring to be able to check in on growth. There’ll be 75 percent less time for testing, which will mean more time for learning. It also informs teachers in real-time during the school year, so they can better help students,” said DeSantis.

“I do agree and I concur with the Governor and the Commissioner that there are better ways of assessing students rather than relying on one single end-of-the-year assessment that is all inclusive. Obviously we are going to be very attentive to legislative processes that will bring to the state appropriate replacements for these assessments,” said Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

The United Teachers of Dade issued a statement applauding the ending of the FSA.

They probably don't like how the year-end testing is used to punish low performing schools regardless of the background and aptitude of the students. Why would a good teacher ever go to work in a struggling low income community? No, I did not support NCLB.
