France Is Sending Mirage 2000 Fighters to Battle Russia

Then it wasn't very "critical" since Ukraine wasn't defeated in that period.

Actually, it was ditched as a choice by most of NATO being considered significantly inferior to the F-16. The Mirage 2000 was intended as a short-range interceptor with a limited ground attack capability as a secondary role.
None of what you wrote disputes my statement that it is a fourth generation fighter -the same vintage as F-16s and hardly grossly obsolete - should be competitive against most Russian jet technology. You made it sound like the Mirage 2000 was hopelessly obsolete and useless.
France doesn't give away any military equipment for free.
This time they do. This article made it sound like France was donating their Mirage 2000s to Ukraine, as their fifth generation Dassault interceptors came on line.

In a twist of the traditional historical narrative, France is more committed to opposing tyranny, Kremlin imperialism, and supporting freedom and liberty than are Republicans.
So let them take a more active role. The US has spent enough its time for Europe to step up to the plate.

If you look closely at analyses of the two, the F-16 has significant advantages over the Mirage in terms of mission capability, flexibility in roles, while there isn't a lot to choose between the two--they are close--in terms of just air-to-air combat (eg., "dogfighting"). Where the F-16 excels, is it has much better maintainability, is supported far better for future upgrades, uses a much better array of guided weapons, particularly in terms of air-to-air combat. The Matra missiles available just don't compare to the US ones the 16 can use.

They might just to unload them rather than scrap them. It would buy some diplomatic favor down the road I suppose. In any case, look at it as the Mirage is better than nothing, and as a defensive aircraft it won't be that bad. I wouldn't expect Ukraine to use it offensively due to lack of range, and the weapons loadout being limited to French munitions of which Ukraine has only a limited selection.

Your claim was that the Mirage 2000 was hopelessly outdated and obsolete. Not that the F-16 is nominally superior.

The Russians don't have the F-16, so Ukrainian Mirage 2000 pilots won't be flying against the Falcon. They will be flying against Russian pilots in Russian-quality jets.

No, I claimed it was an inferior aircraft to the F-16 and obsolescent. That doesn't make it useless, it just makes it an inferior choice to the F-16. But then again, Ukraine is a beggar and beggars can't be choosers.

Against Russian jets it's likely to be effective. Pilot skill levels? Hard to say. I doubt that Ukranian pilots are much different in terms of ability compared to Russian ones.

Being nominally inferior to the F-16 doesn't make it hopelessly obsolete, and more importantly your point is irrelevant and moot - Russians don't fly the F-16, they fly Russian-quality planes with Russian quality pilots

I never said it was "hopelessly obsolete." I'm pointing out, obliquely, that a nation having what amounts to a polyglot of hand-me-downs from a variety of sources to fight a war with is not a good thing. Sure, it's better than nothing, but it grossly complicates everything you do at the same time.

Russian quality pilots are generally on par with Western ones. They are let down by their equipment and the organizational structure they're flying in.

France’s donation of Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets to Ukraine is a significant boost for Kyiv’s air capabilities, but it comes with challenges.

-Set for delivery in early 2025, the jets will require Ukrainian pilots and crews to undergo extensive training, hindered by language barriers and technical complexity.

The Mirage 2000-5F, with its advanced RDY-3 radar and capability to launch Storm Shadow cruise missiles, offers strong ground-strike and air-to-air combat potential.

Despite these capabilities, the effectiveness of the transfer hinges on successful training and integration into Ukraine’s air force.

-This move underscores France’s commitment to aiding Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.

It's going to take our NATO allies to keep Ukraine in the fight against Russia now that Trump will be president again?!!

Okay, so I have cornered you into saying the Mirage 2000-5F is just nominally inferior to another American fourth generation fighter, but it's perfectly capable of competing in the airspace of the Russo-Ukranian war.

It is significantly inferior. It is a decent clear weather interceptor for defense of your air space and has a so-so ground attack capability. Outside of that, it's not very useful. The other problem is since it is completely dissimilar in parts, and requires more maintenance than an F-16, it will add a significant burden to supporting it in use.

Imagine starting WWIII over something the size of the Gadsen Purchase.

and the French and Republicans are more committed than Demmycrats........there is nothing new under the sun.......

The Republicans aren't committed to standing up to Putin! LOL. Putin's best friend got elected POTUS by the GOP. Now he will deliver to Putin what Putin wanted him for. He'll either turn over Ukraine to Putin outright or he'll destabilize NATO, both are EXACTLY what Putin wants.

Trump will deliver on his obligations to his master.

Pretty sure this a violation of the NATO charter?

NATO countries can’t go on the offensive or create new alliances.
