Climate change: Bigger hurricanes are now more damaging

The biggest and most damaging hurricanes are now three times more frequent than they were 100 years ago, say researchers.

Using a new method of calculating the destruction, the scientists say the increase in frequency is "unequivocal".

Previous attempts to isolate the impact of climate change on hurricanes have often came up with conflicting results.

But the new study says the increase in damage caused by these big cyclones is linked by global warming.

So you have to resort to redefining hurricanes now to say there's an 'increase'???:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Define 'global warming'.

Italy's Venice flooded by highest tide in 50 years

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said he would declare a state of disaster after 'exceptional' floods blamed on climate change.

Venice was hit by the highest tide in more than 50 years late on Tuesday, with tourists wading through flooded streets to seek shelter as a fierce wind whipped up waves in St Mark's Square.

The exceptionally intense "acqua alta," or high waters, peaked at 1.87 metres (six feet) as the flood alarm sounded across Italy's iconic city of canals, the tide monitoring centre said.

"We're currently facing an exceptionally high tide. Everyone has been mobilised to cope with the emergency," Venice's mayor Luigi Brugnaro tweeted.

Silt washing down the river over the years sucks, doesn't it?

'An apocalypse happened': Venice counts cost of devastating floods

Businesses and residents say they feel helpless as they brace for next high tides

“We feel helpless in the face of nature, but we are also disappointed that either politics or technology has failed,” said Claudio Vernier, president of the St Mark’s Square Traders’ Association. “They’ve been talking about defending this city for decades but that’s all they do – talk.”

They should be dredging the river and cleaning out the built up silt in the area.

Floods happen.

That they do. The floods in Venice are happening due to two things happening at once:
1) The land that Venice sits on is sinking.
2) The river delta that Venice sits on is filling with silt. It needs to be dredged, and the problem will be much less acute.

Environmentalists stop 2) from happening.
