Samaritans do not think they are Jews. They call themselves Israelites, or use the name of Israel's capital, Samaria.
According to the Old Testament, Israel was a unified kingdom, that divided into Israel and Judah about 3,000 years ago. Jews are from the Judah split of that, and Samaritans are from the Israel split of that. Samaritans are their own religion that evolved for the last 3,000 years side by side with Judaism.
Many modern historians question whether there ever was a unified kingdom. In that case, immigrants from a collapsing Israel brought religious ideas that Jews copied. That wold make Samaritans the original religion, and Judaism the child religion.
Either way, the Samaritans are not Jews anymore than Jews are Muslims or Christians.
