I don't know why you are trying to apply 1964 to 2019. It's a tenuous, "bothsiderist" attempt to paint Democrats as racist by invoking a conversation you had...55 years ago?

How relevant is that conversation to today? Not at all.

Yes, in 1964, the Democratic Party had a lot of racists in it. Fast forward to 2019 and all those people who were racist in the Democratic Party in 1964 now find themselves voting for Trump and supporting Republicans.

This can't be new information for you.

The point is that people who are loyal Democrats can still be racist (especially union guys)--both in 1964 and 2019.

So the "conventional wisdom" might be that confronting MAGAts will turn people off, but the electoral totals from 4 months ago say otherwise.

The 2018 midterm results had nothing to do with confronting MAGA hats. It was easily predictable because the president's party almost always loses seats in midterm elections.

Based on that logic Obama lost 63 seats in 2010 because conservatives were confronting Obama supporters.

Obama lost more seats (63) than Trump (41) because Obama's party picked up a lot more seats in 2008 and had more seats to lose. Trump's party actually lost seats in 2016 and had fewer seats to lose.

I'd argue your bothsiderism is more destructive to debate than being incivil. The reason is because bothsiderism always must elevate a shitty belief to contrast with another. And what is the goal of "bothsiderism"? Is it for improved political discourse? Hell fucking no. The goal of "bothsiderism" is accommodation. I'm tired of accommodating bad faith.

Again, you keep deflecting from the real discussion. It does not matter whose ideas are better but that both sides have the same rights and freedoms to express their views and both sides are equally wrong to punish people because of those beliefs by engaging in uncivil behavior and generally being assholes.
