Idaho tries to enforce "slowpoke law" against left lane blockers

Text Drivers are Killers

Joe Biden - "Time to put Trump in the bullseye."
I support this since it only applies to people doing UNDER the speed limit in the left lane. You can sit in the left lane all you want as long as you do the speed limit. The psychopath drivers wanted a law that reserves the left lane for those doing 20 + mph over the speed limit!!!

july 30 2018 Only two Idaho drivers have been cited for driving too slowly in the fast lane since the state’s new “slowpoke” law took effect July 1. Three other drivers got warnings that they better go the speed limit in the left lane or scoot over.

Those numbers, current as of July 27, are from the Idaho State Police, which patrols the state’s highways. Tickets for speeding during that time frame — numbering 2,495 — far surpass these five cases of impeding fast-lane traffic.

Even so, the new law gives troopers another tool to keep roads safer, said bill sponsor Rep. Lance Clow, R-Twin Falls.

When vehicles lack speed or momentum to pass in a reasonable amount of time, he said, it creates a traffic hazard and a potential for road rage.

Now, drivers impeding traffic on multilane highways by going below the speed limit in the left lane could face a $90 fine.

Drivers won’t be ticketed for driving the speed limit in the left lane, Staley said, even if they “impede” those who want to go faster.

“If you’re going the lawful rate of speed, another person shouldn’t push up behind you,” he said.

Slowpokes are liable to cause an accident, since most the speed limit through Idaho is 80 mph on the main interstate. I believe in the minimum speed limit.

I drive the speed limit or a little faster, in the left lane, all the time.

Fuck those who want to act like they're on the autobahn. :D

I am with you on this.
I will not drive in the beat up, potholed and patched truck lane just to accommodate some jerk who wants to speed by without inconvenience.
If you really want to do faster than the limit, stop flashing your lights, pass me on the right and STFU.

Driving slow in the left lane should be an offense punishable by capital punishment.

If you define the speed limit as "slow" you are the criminal here.
If you want to have people executed for keeping to the posted limit you are insane, but then we have already established that in another thread.
Pass on the right, crazy.

I thought my post would get the Trump supporters to stop calling me a "liberal" ,when they see I'm far right batshit crazy about Law and Order!

If we had stiff penalties for the deadly crime of speeding there wouldn't be a problem here. Speeding 10+ over the limit should be punished by a huge fine and loss of license.

Motor vehicle and traffic laws in the U.S. have been antiquated for generations, and in desperate need of extensive overhaul.

Slothful lane blockage, whether by parking, or improper lane selection, is rude and dangerous.

Motor vehicle speed laws embarrass us as a culture.

Some of these speed limits were set over half a century ago. Back then there were cars with 2 wheel drum brakes on the road, rolling on bias ply tires.

Today many cars have 4 wheel power disc brakes, on radial tires. Stopping distances have been cut roughly in half.

And yet the speed limits on some highways are exactly the same as they were over a half a century ago.

It's so bad that the public has voted with out feet. I drove from Northern New York to North Carolina, and took I-95 for much of the way. There are long stretches of I-95 where the posted speed limit is 70 MPH. There as elsewhere, it's common to find the flow of traffic (FOT) 10 MPH over the posted speed limit. So I had to do 80 MPH or better, just to keep up with traffic.

EXCELLENT !!

Many modern cars can handle that quite easily. Do not infer what I did not imply. It's not like we sneaked around doing something naughty, and by dint of pure luck escaped law enforcement detection. That's a round trip that's thousands of miles. I encountered many speed traps in various States along the way. I saw plenty of police cars, but never once saw any flashing lights.

I'm not pretending there are no bad guys out there. But ridiculous antiquated motor vehicle and traffic laws make criminals of virtually all of us.

I once read an account of an "Eskimo" culture that had only one law: "No trouble-making."

I think that's a fairly useful standard. Candidly, if I'm sawing wood at 3:AM, and some nurse making her way home after an 18 hour shift technically runs a stop sign, because s/he can see there isn't another car on the road for miles, I would not lose any sleep over it.

As TK #1 acknowledges, inconsiderate driving is a major problem. But if I'm taking Rt. 17 to Rockland County and a guy in a $quarter $million $dollar Porsche passes me doing 90 MPH, in a car German engineers designed for cruising on the Autobahn at 240 KPH, why should I care, as long as it's not done recklessly?

This car, my car can easily cruise at 80+ MPH.
PS
From where I live, it's 10 miles to the nearest store. The highway speed limit is 55 MPH. But I'm a safer driver at 70 MPH than at 55 MPH. At 55 MPH, it's so ploddingly slow and boring, I find myself multi-taking; cleaning out the glove box, sorting my mail, or whatever else is at hand.
At 70 MPH, the view out the windshield becomes "interesting", and can hold my undivided attention.

Um, it's illegal to pass on the right. :D

No.

PA. has a law against running the left lane unless you're passing.

PA also has laws against speeding.
Good luck with that.
If I am driving the limit in the left lane and you are doing 120 which one of us is going to get pulled over?
