The date the Christ was born is unknown. It is, however, probably sometime in the Spring, during lambing season (why shepherds were out watching their flocks by night). Probably around early April.
There was (and still is) a lot of pagan worship of the Winter solstice. This event is difficult to measure, but pagans built crude instruments to try to place it as accurately as possible. This worship often included some form of banishing evil demons, and calling back the Sun from it's lowest point of travel in the sky. It was these ceremonies that brought a tree into the house (often not an evergreen as is done now). The tree was decorated, but not lit.
The Catholic Church placed the birth of Christ on Dec 25th (a few days after the Winter solstice) to try to quash these pagan religions.
They were big in to anagrams at the time. The specified the tree should be an evergreen because that tree never loses it's leaves, like the Tree of Life. The decorations were still tolerated of course.
A special mass was designated for that day to honor the occasion of the birth of Christ, and so it is called Christ's mass or Christmas.
Obviously, you can't quash pagan religion. It still goes on today.
The Winter solstice is an important event of the year. It's the time when the Sun travels lowest in the sky (for the northern hemisphere) and the Moon travels highest in the sky (for the northern hemisphere). It often marks a kind of rebirth or redemption, as the Sun moving back northward provides a hope for the coming Spring and Summer to follow.
Thus, on many calendars, this even marks the beginning of a new year. January itself is named after the god Janus, the two faced god. One face looks forward to the coming year, and the other looks back to the previous one.
Most people then counted the number of Moons in a year (the Chinese and Japanese still use the symbol for a moon to mean 'month'). Thus a year would typically have 13 Moons (the Moon completes an orbit every 27 days, 23 hours, 4 minutes, and 11 seconds, producing an average of 13 Moons a year).
Calendars are funny things. There are quite a few of them, each used by one society or another. Each begins at a different time for it's 'new year', with some calendars extending for even thousands of years (the Mayan calendar lasts 5125 years). Even measuring time is different depending on where you go. There is the 24 timezones of Earth, of course, but some localized areas have their own little timezone). Some places honor a daylight savings time. Others don't. Astronomers have their own time (sidereal time). Some tribes don't keep time at all, except to note day and night.
The Romans had their new year begin on what is now March 1st (the beginning of planting season). They named most of the months we have now. Under that calendar, October simply means the 8th month, November the ninth month, and December the 10th month. They also use a 12 month calendar, which means there is at least one month where you get a 'Blue Moon', or the full Moon appearing twice in a month.
So there it is. Part of the wacky history of what is now Christmas day.
