Probably because tasers don't work at a distance and they weren't about to let the guy have more time to shoot if, as they believed, he was armed with a firearm.
They may have tasered themselves and gotten in trouble. Better to shoot him 20 times since no one will blame them for that.

Sounds like another shoot-a-thon. I can crank of six shots from a .357 S & W Model 66 in a very short time. Whether I need to in any situation is moot. A group of cops putting 20 shots into one man isn't a good look, there's something wrong there.
Now before the cynics and armchair experts descend on me - I'm focused on the response of the cops, not the call or what was known/unknown. I know coppering in the US is physically dangerous but still, one man, allegedly armed, 20 shots?

OK, who was pointing the weapon here? Even if he had a gun, it was in his pocket. A taser disables a person every bit as much as a gun without killing them.

The simple fact is they don't know where his gun is. You do not go to a gunfight, even a suspected one, with a taser. If I have a gun and you have a taser in a gunfight, I will beat you every time.

5 cops shooting four times each is normal, I would think.
If you are a cop that feels that he is about to get hit, the levels of adrenaline and such in the body would probably compel you to fire several shots.
