If they don't have a gun... don't tell the cops they do...

In San Francisco, at least, they're taught that they should never draw their weapons unless they fear for their own lives or the lives of others and should never fire their weapons unless they're intending to kill.

Handguns have one and only one purpose: to kill human beings.
In San Francisco, if they were coming to a call where it was reported that a person had a gun and was threatening others they would definitely come prepared. I do not doubt that the situation would have been much the same in almost any city.

Well, that and to shoot cans and bottles. And to make one feel more cockstrong.

Yay! He's dead. Let's go eat donuts.

You are just showing your age by being so anti-law enforcement. There is nothing wrong with the police department, and it is in fact a very noble profession.

Perhaps part of the profession is noble. I can agree with that much. But very much of it is not so noble. Becoming code enforcers, writing tickets for lame infractions that threaten nobody, and seizing property for no other reason than it breaks some idiotic law, these are not so noble.

I believe you are wrong on that point. The infractions, the idiotic laws, etc. are the responsibility of the legislature. Law enforcement is there for exactly that-- enforcement. As long as ridiculous laws are on the books, is the responsibility for law enforcement to do its job.

Then they should change their mantra from "To protect and serve..." to "To serve the government". It would at least be more honest.

Thank you! That is what I've been trying to say. If cops were trained to incapacitate, they would probably use their firearms much more frequently. As it is, a cop will try any possible means of controlling the situation before drawing his weapon, if for no other reason than the paperwork involved.

Cops use their firearms where necessary. That might seem obvious but it's what happens. In my jurisdiction if a cop pulls their gun from its holster, intending to use it offensively or defensively, then they have to fill in a report. If it's not used then no big deal, report filed, if it's discharged (regardless of results) then it's investigated.

And that's exactly how I was trained and am still being trained every time I go to qualify.

To protect (the "noble" part of their job, even according to you) and serve (to serve the government, yes, by carrying out the laws set forth)

If you have a problem with law enforcement following the rules set forth by the legislature, you aren't going to learn anything through reasonable argument.

Their Service is "to" the community with the power of the government which is supposed to be representatives of the community, voted into office by the community, working for the community.

Any other result is our own danged fault.
