Democrats ran that state until the 1980s, and probably more recently than that. Many of those states, such as SC and Loseranna, didn't elect a Republican governor until this century.

Yeah, because the Democrats evolved once the civil rights era was over, and the Republicans responded by taking their old territory and promising voters the same old ignorant Old South that had been before. This was wildly successful. The south will never change and deserves to suffer.
