Let's All Chant the New Mantra: "Fatherland, Socialism or Death"

So what? The number of Athiest still does not change the fact that over 2/3 of this country identify as christians.
I never said they weren't a majority, just that that majority is ebbing and that there is less religion. Do you deny that?

You're just mad cause we no longer have to sit and not only listen to people recite a poem to the flag but we don't have sit there while the school intecom system is used to recite a prayer.
Do I sound mad? I'm not religious but nor do I care about hearing God here or there. I'm not a fanatical athiest anymore than a fanatical anything else.

That doesn't mean religion is on the decline it just means that state endorced religious practices are no longer the norm.
And the reason they are on the decline, is because the political electorate is not up in arms to any changes BECAUSE they are less religious.

According to a 2002 survey by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, the U.S. was the only developed nation in the survey where a majority of citizens reported that religion plays a "very important" role in their lives.

According to the CIA World Factbook, the U.S. is 78% Christian and 10% no religion, while other religions comprise 12% of the U.S. population. In descending order, the largest identified religious groups are Protestant (52%); Roman Catholic (24%); Mormon (2%); Buddhist (2%); Jewish (1%); and Muslim (1%)

A 2006 online Harris Poll of 2,010 U.S. adults (18 and older) found that 58% of those surveyed were "absolutely certain" that God exists while 6% were "absolutely certain" that God does not exist.[6] The other 36% to 38% reported that they were only "somewhat certain" or "unsure" regarding the existence of God (21% reported they were "somewhat certain that there is a God," 11% that they were "not sure whether or not there is a God," and 6% that they were "somewhat certain that there is no God"). The poll showed that an "absolute certain" belief in God increased with age: while only 43%-45% of those aged 18-29 were "absolutely certain" that God exists, 54% of those aged 30-39 were "absolutely certain" that God exists, and 63%-65% of those aged 40 and older were "absolutely certain" that God exists.

A 2006 CBS News Poll of 899 U.S. adults found that 82% of those surveyed believed in God, while 9% believed in "some other universal spirit or higher power," 8% believed in neither, and 1% were unsure.

A 2004 Newsweek Poll of 1,009 U.S. adults, conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates, found that 82% of those surveyed believed that Jesus was God or the Son of God.

Yup god is almost dead in the good ole U S of A. Please.

I never said they were not a majority or even doing well, I just said that there is less religion, which is true. You're not the type to twist words, so please don't with mine.

I don't know exactly, but it's been freaking me out. It's a picture of ib1, but what is supposed to be around the mouth area...I shudder to think, so I try not to look at it.

The effects of cranial inversion?

Censorship gone bad?

You're trying to make a case based on perception. But the number of atheists in America has been growing nonstop for years:
http://www.mnatheists.org/beyond.html

America has the highest number of people out of any developed nation that go to church on a weekly basis - 40%. Evangeliscism has been growing for a long time. The number of total Christians has gone down by about 10% in the past 40 years, but the number of radical Christians has been growing more than enough to make up for that.

So dano is arguing that america is less christian therefore less bad, and the fundamentalist atheist zealots are arguing that america is more christian therefore more bad? The apparently mutually agreed upon and yet still ignored premise is that christianity = bad. Is that correct?

I'd like to see some numbers to back that claim up.

Yes.

I remember back when I was in elementary school, like 5th grade, some kid was Jehovahs Witness or some crap religion and refused to say it on the grounds it was against his religion...he was forced to recite it.

Freedom in this country is an illusion. Anyone that thinks otherwise is a fucking dummy. I've lived in like 6 different countries and most of them are freer than tha USA.

darn communist, love it or leave it ;)

I find it eerie when kids are made to recite any slogans in school be it leftist, fascist or pledging allegiance to a flag.

ch

check out the history of the 'pledge' for the good old us of a - it was intended to create uniform thought toward the union among children

I'd like to see some numbers to back that claim up.
Every poll ever done on church attendance in the US shows at or about 40% every single one. There was ONE study that called that number into question and they only studied ONE region. But every PEW and Gallup Poll since the 30's show a 40 percent attendence self reporting rate. So if that is not true then 40% of believers lie every year they are asked.

When I went to public school for 2 yrs, we had to sing God save the Queen every morning and at assemblies. *shudder*

Trust me, 25 12 yrs olds chanting Hail Mary and singing 'Oh, Canada' (in English AND French) is a much better way to begin your education experience every morning. Totally different.

Pretty much the flag replaced that "Queen" stuff in the US. Depending, of course, in which state you reside.

My experience was clearly different than the experience of others.

I think the anthem would have been ok, but refusing to pray would have caused some problems. High School was a bit different, but it was still a Catholic school and certain things were expected by some teachers since they were nuns and/or sisters or religion teachers. Other teachers were a little more accommodating as long as you didn't disrupt the class.

When I was in gr 12 (I know off topic) someone within the school board admin thought it would be a good idea for all middle/high schools to raise the flag at half mast, and hold a prayer session (every Friday morning at 10am) in honor of all the aborted babies in the world. We were actually excused from class for 15 min to take part in that activity. I naturally used that time to go for a smoke.
