Liberals....about my "racist" moniker

I'll be honest Damo - the reason I keep bringing the blackface caricature up, is because Cons and libertarians went out of their way to minimize it or make excuses for it.

I've already posted my feeling about institutional racism, and the only con responses were such gems as: "Demcrats did it too!", or "What about Affirmative Action discrminating against whites"?

This tells me that cons either have no clue about the problems of real institutional racism (and sexism), or they simply are protecting their turf at the top of the food chain. At the expense of others.

Hmmm...

My first reaction to almost every situation, my own personal reaction, is "What can I learn from this?"

Regardless of where it came from, the discussion still turned to a frank discussion of racism. Some had points that I thought showed an internal racism, I used those to think "Did I think that way?" or "Do I think that way?"

I naturally turn to introspection when such discussions begin. It is in my nature, and in the nature of my beliefs.

I hope you notice cypress, that since I got on the board today, I've been explaining the difference between the symbol Dano used and the excuses being brought up. I honestly attribute it to ignorance too, I am one who hates when someone is accused of racism right away, but this was definatly racist, and if it was not meant to be, then an apology should be offered because they didn't understand how it was racist.

I just think you guys make a too big of a deal of things. Seriously some of you are very tightly wound.

Racism can either be intentional or unintentional. Its the unintentional variety that can be the most insidious. Its up to ourselves as human beings to recognize unintentional racism and sexism, regardless of our "intent". Its the unintentional variety of racism that is the glue that holds together the infrastructure of institutional discrimination. As these threads have demonstrated, few on the con side are willing to learn how to deal with, or mitigate, unintentional racism. Its laughed off as just having some "good fun".

I wouldn't put this up there with someone putting up a swastika symbol for their avatar to piss off a jewish poster, that is clear indication that they are trying to offend jews.

Dano is saying that he did this to point out a double standard, that black men dressing up as whites is equal to white men dressing up as blacks. There is a line though, and it was crossed either intentionally or unintentional. Blackface is considered racist because there were racist purposes behind it. Either way, when I looked at it, I also saw the old-time black face where white men dressed up as blacks, just to keep black men from stage acting.

I didn't think that you, or SF, would go along with it, actually.

I was just disappointed that it seemed so many others were. I know a lot of racist and sexist white men. I live in NY.

It gets really gross and really old.

Well im not crusading for his stupid argument about a double standard, it just takes a lot to get me offended. I pretty much roll my eyes at everything.

Yeah, I know Grind. I'm not really offended myself either, I think it was unintentional. I just think that those who were offended deserve an apology rather than trying to explain it away.

"You are a whore period, you whore the board looking to get all males to fall in line to your BS"

Dano always manages to drain just a little more out of an already shallow pool.

Amazing.

oh you aren't offended?!?! You must be a racist then, just like me because I wasn't offended.

Personally, no, I wasn't offended. But I can clearly see how someone could be offended, and should be offended if they saw it the same way I did. I'm like you in a way, not easily offended. Someone could make fun of me all they want, call me a cracker and tell me I can't jump.. I just don't take it to heart. It takes a lot more than that.

Dano,

Would you display a Swatztika (sp?) in front of a Jewish Synagogue and then when they got, rightfully so, pissed off at you and came after you with whatever weapon they had tell them you just wanted to show them that they were racist because they did not speak out against Christian persecution in Muslim lands?

You are right, I have known you for a long time but that doesn't mean that I have to think something you did or said was not racist and insensitive when it clearly was.

Did you think pointing out one hypocrisy was going to do any good at all? There is not one living human being (moderate, conservative or liberal) that is not hypocritical in some respect. So what, liberals are hypocritical when it comes to pointing out that racism exists both ways. Who cares?

What you have done is given Darla and Ib1 more ammunition the next time they want to point out that every conservative white man is a racist pig. I guess to that I should say, Thanks a lot.

Don't give Dano and his "creative sense of humor" any new ideas...

I don't think that "every" conservative white man is a racist pig. And you left out sexist by the way.

I think of the matter, much like John Stuart Mills though when he said that, while it was not true that all conservatives are stupid, it is true that most stupid people are conservatives.

So, to recap, because the iq level on this board hits an average of 82 on a good day..."Darla thinks" that not all conservative white men are racist and sexist, but, most racist and sexist white men are conservatives.

Ahh, but that is not necessarily true either as there are clearly liberal white women who are also racist and sexist. There are also liberal black men who are sexist and racists. Unfortunately, though, it is not politically correct to point this out.

I'm not politically correct, whatever that means. I wrote and published a piece about the Imus incident pointing out that sexism was not soley confined to white men.

As far as black men being racist, we have a different definition of racism.

And if by white women being racist and sexist, you are implying that they can be "sexist" against men, or "racist" against white men, then once again, our definitions differ.

Also, you'll note that, as did John Stuart Mills, I used the word "most", because of course there are liberal racists and sexists. We are talking majority here.

This has gotten blown way out of hand. Dano just change the stupid avatar already. You've made your point, whatever it was. Let's move on.

By politically correct, I mean that I could have my head handed to me on a platter for even insinuating that a woman could be sexist or a black man could be racist.

I never indicated you were politically correct.

I would like to know your definition of both racism and sexism.

My definition would be "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others." and similar for sexism.

If I believe that I am inherently better than you because I am male and you are female that makes me a sexist. If I believe I am inherently better than BAC because I am white and he is black that makes me a racist. Going along with that if I believe I should have certain privileges that you don't have because I am male and you are female then I am by definition sexist. If I believe that I can denigrate you because you are female that would be sexist.

So, how would you define the two?
