I do verbally thank him/her, and if he/she did it every day for four years, I would write a letter, or something more significant than just a verbal thank you.

I suppose I was just raised to be polite.

The secret to making any note seem to come from you is not just do it in your voice, but involve personal interaction you had with them individually. A low level staffer would have no idea how a personal piece of interaction, but melania should. Even if she got assistance writing it, she could put together a believable letter if she were involved, and cared about other people.
