Not only that, but most guns that criminals have they are not using at any given moment.

A gun does not mean a person is a criminal. There are literally hundreds of people around you right not that own and carry guns. They aren't shooting you or anyone else with them. Self defense is an inherent right. That includes defense using the weapon of your choice.

If you ban all guns, you can arrest anyone who is caught with a gun.

America is unique.
It's probably the only nation in the world where the individual is constitutionally guaranteed the right to own firearms as a basic feature of being a citizen in good standing.
This is a right that cannot be changed by statute, and in today's environment, the constitutional amendment of any kind is an impossibility.

Unless our nation is successfully invaded and occupied,
and our heavily armed citizenry is completely annihilated,
this will probably be the case forever.
