Yes. The petroleum crisis is intentional. We could be on nuke, we could be telecommuting.

Why aren't we? The influence of big oil? Urban landholders unwilling to see their land value plummet if true telecommuting is allowed? yes, yes, and yes, and yes. and more.

It's common for people to believe that our current state is the worst state ever. This has been repeated throughout history. But our debt has been about twice as high as this before, and was greater in the 80's too.

I do not believe that at all. I do believe the peak of our golden age has passed though.

And the excrement will hit the air movement device fairly soon.

Asshat the globalization will reverse when it all ocmes tumbling down because of the loss of cheap oil.
The area daries and food processing will come back. the mega conglomerates will disperse back out as the distribution costs will be too high.
Smaller more dispersed businesses will become a necessity once again.
But times will not be as easy either.

I fear the same, that we have peaked, unless the middle class wakes up and does something, and from what I have seen, that isn't going to happen. I think
Americans are blissfully unaware of our REAL economic situation and they must always vote against their own best interest. I am trying to educate the younger generation. Some would consider that a scary thought! :p

That would be nice. Their distribution network is pretty high tech though. You know they probably have a fully integrated nuclear powered grid for their purposes.

The surburbanites will have a problem commuting 40-50 miles to work. and paying big bucks for rationed gas....Inflation will go rampant, etc....
It is inevitable that the change is going to hurt. And the longer we wait to address the problem the bigger the hurt...

America's been "in a period of decline" by doomsayers since the 1790's.

The Decline of the West (German: Der Untergang des Abendlandes) is a two-volume work by Oswald Spengler, the first volume of which was published in the summer of 1918. Spengler revised this volume in 1922 and published the second volume, subtitled Perspectives of World History, in 1923.

The book includes the idea of the Muslims being Magian, Greeks being Apollonian, and the Westerners being Faustian, and according to its theories we are now living in the winter time of the Faustian civilization. His description of the Faustian civilization is where the populace constantly strives for the unattainable—making the western man a proud but tragic figure, for while he strives and creates he secretly knows the actual goal will never be reached.

SOunds idiotic. The ancient peoples have long been wanting to dominate the individual oriented west. Individualism is a quantum leap in evolution which the tribalists fear, and are feverishly trying to control. Hierarchy has failed.

We're paying the price for what rome did to the middleast. Finally retribution is coming. But we were all victims of rome.
