Obama offers plan for free community college

FORT DODGE, Iowa (CNN) — Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, announced Monday a proposed tax credit that he says would cover the cost of community college for most high school graduates.

"For too long policy makers in Washington have treated community colleges as a step child of the higher education system instead of essential resources for training and preparing the workers of tomorrow," Obama said at a press conference.

The presidential hopeful said the tax credit would cover the first $4,000 of college, which according to him would make community college "completely free for most Americans."

"These schools produce the lifeblood of our communities and the backbone of our workforce," Obama added. "As our changing economy demands a more skilled workforce, America's community colleges must be at the forefront of higher education and economic competitiveness."

Obama made the comments in front of students and reporters gathered at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Most high school grads don't really make enough to pay a substantial amount in taxes anyway.

I did the math and even if you're only making $16k a year, its relatively significant. My only question is where does he plan on finding that money in the budget to execute said plan.

Or is he going to tax the "rich" aka the middle class.

yes but there parents do

Are the parent's gettign the credit or are the kids? If its the parent's then yes, its substantial and a lot of people will be able to reap the maximum benefits of the credit, but from your post it seemed like it was going to be applied to the kids tax bill.

But here's my bottom line:

As long as my taxes don't go up, its a great idea.

This is not.......

a new idea...back in the sixtees and before...Community College(Jr.College) was free to all students...just had to pay a small registration fee and for personal needs such as books! Both houses of congress killed this one...they are to blame!

all the dems need to do and i dont know a person making over 250 that would hurt over it... is to rollback bush tax cuts.. to 250K... this wont effect small business owners and middle class in East and west expensive zones.

if you start targeting 150K... that fucks with middle class in NY BOSTON WASHINGTON, CHICAGO, LA, SANFRAN... etc.

Take that money and make it revenue Neutral ..
one such revenue neutrality is to encourage college by making a tax deduction like this.

is he serious?? you cant get a minimum pay job anymore w/ an associates degree, they are worthless.

and why should they be free, most people can pay for them w/ a student loan and have tuition covered.

If by 'Bold' you mean 'Socialistic' then yes.
We have a spending problem, we have a giant amount of debt, this makes it much worse.

And for the Dems, yes Iraq does too.

i refuse to vote for ANY candidate that will target my income level as needing higher taxes.. That is my golden rule for this election. Cause i have nothing at the end of the month and i work my ass off in a high paying job.

As far as social programs go I belive this is one of the best ideas, education levels the playing field more effectivly than just about anything.

If the poor have access as equally as the rich getting ahead if you are poor becomes more of an equal chance as getting ahead if you are rich.

yes but there parents do

my mom never paid anything for my years at community college, a student loan was more than enough and i even got some money in the bank. so then the mom gets the deduction since most college students are still dependants on their parents returns, and the college student does all the work...

doesn't seem fair to me.

see above... roll back bush taxcuts down to 250K.. make it revenue neutral by offering more tax relief for poor and middle class.

Looks like its based on tax credits to me.

Well, whatever it is, this kind of stuff is certainly better than the bomb iran, stay the course in iraq, and overturn Roe v Wade stuff we hear from the other side.

life is not fair. stop crying.

not really.

id love to see how he plans on paying for this plus his free healthcare plan
Pay? What do you mean "pay"? It's all "free", it just falls out of the sky, boldly of course.

It seems kind of ominous that old fashioned tax-and-spend is now sold as "bold ideas".

$250K per person and not per household.
