September 16, 2016 - "Just weeks after ISIS suffered a major loss when its chief spokesman was taken out in an air attack, the U.S. announced it had killed his close associate in a strike.

The U.S. targeted ISIS leader Wael Adel Salman, aka Abu Muhammed Furqan, in a September 7 airstrike, Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said in a statement issued Friday.

The strike took out one of the very limited number of ISIS leaders who had "direct access" to Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, according to a US official. The US conducted the strike using a drone, hitting him on a motorcycle just outside a house in Raqqa, ISIS's self-declared capital, the official added.

Cook called Salman one of the "most senior leaders" in ISIS.

"He operated as the minister of Information for the terror organization and was a prominent member of its Senior Shura Council -- ISIL's leadership group," Cook added, using the government's preferred acronym for the terror group.

The US has now killed in the last two months two of the "very few" ISIS leaders with direct access to Baghdadi, the official said. Mohammad al-Adnani was killed in Syria in a US airstrike on August 30. He was thought to be in charge of external terror operations.

"Baghdadi's inner circle was already small, and it's getting smaller," the official added. Salman is assessed to have been one of the five most-senior officials in ISIS before he and Adnani were killed.

Cook said Salman was responsible for overseeing the production of "terrorist propaganda videos showing torture and executions."

October 4, 2016 - "Rising wages and cheap loans are setting the stage for a strong holiday season, according to retailers, consultants and pollsters.

On Tuesday, the National Retail Federation predicted a 3.6-percent increase in holiday sales, compared with 2015. That's considerably better than the 10-year average gain of 2.5 percent for the holiday period.

Why the optimism? "People have more money in their pocket and an expanded use of credit," NRF chief economist Jack Kleinhenz said on a conference call with reporters.

The industry trade group expects sales to hit $655.8 billion, up from $626.1 billion last year. Kleinhenz says consumers are being buoyed by low unemployment, rising income and low interest rates."

October 6, 2016 - "The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week to near a 43-year low, an indication of firmness in the labor market which may support an interest rate increase by the U.S. Federal Reserve this year.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits declined 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 249,000 for the week ended Oct. 1, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

First-time claims were the lowest since April, when initial applications for aid were at levels not seen since November 1973.

It's the 83rd consecutive week claims have remained below 300,000, which is seen as indicative of a strong labor market."

October 7, 2016 - "Employers continued to add to payrolls in September as record openings drew more Americans into the workforce and most found jobs, indicating the U.S. labor market is settling into a pace that will support the economy.

The 156,000 increase followed a 167,000 rise in August that was more than previously estimated, a Labor Department report showed Friday in Washington. While the September figure was weaker than the 172,000 median forecast of economists, payrolls included the biggest drop in government employment in a year. The jobless rate rose to 5 percent as the labor participation rate ticked up to a six-month high.

Companies face a limited pool of available and qualified workers at the same time that improving prospects for employment are drawing more people into the labor force. Steady progress will underpin further wage gains and consumer spending, the main driver of U.S. expansion this year, and encourage Federal Reserve policy makers to follow through on their forecast for an interest-rate increase by the end of 2016.

“The jobs market continues to move forward,” said Ryan Sweet, an economist at Moody’s Analytics Inc. in West Chester, Pennsylvania. “The unemployment rate rose for all the right reasons. We got some acceleration in wage growth in September but we’d love to see much stronger gains.”

October 14, 2016 - "American travel to Cuba has been on the rise in recent years, and now there are two more reasons for U.S. travelers to head to the island nation: rum and cigars.

The Obama administration on Friday lifted restrictions on how many cigars and bottles of rum Americans can bring back from Cuba, part of continuing efforts to mend more than five decades of strained relations between the nations.

“This is a big change and one that’s long overdue,” said David Savona, executive editor of Cigar Aficionado magazine. “For quite a long time, Americans have been prohibited from bringing back Cuban cigars, and this lifts many of those limitations.”

Under the new rules, which take effect Monday, Americans may bring back up to 100 Cuban cigars and 1 liter of Cuban rum, whether purchased in Cuba or other countries, for personal consumption without paying customs taxes.

The administration is also clearing the way for cargo ships to travel between the two countries and making it easier for scientists from the United States and Cuba to partner on medical research."
