That is one reason Trump lost. There have been thousands of Republican changing party registration. I think some of that is people abandoning Republicans because they are loyal Trump supporters and think they betrayed him. About one-third switched to Democrat.

I've been a fan reader of dystopian fiction since Alas, Babylon came out in the early 60s. I always thought that when presented with a global existential threat that Americans would band together against it like we did in 2001. You would think that a pandemic would have caused a sea change in this country. Instead, it divided us further. If I needed one more thing to convince me that my lifelong affinity for liberal/progressive ideas and leaders was the right choice -- this pandemic sealed the deal. Why any thinking, rational, intelligent person would side with the conservatives of America now is beyond my comprehension.
I think there are strategist/PR people who look for ways to use events to further divide us (helped by social media).
I occasionally used novels in my classes. Do you know "Earth Abides"?
