I lived in the Fort Lauderdale area for a year and LOVED it. Got dive certified and love the water there. ;)

Unlike tornados or EARTHQUAKES; one has plenty of notice of an incoming hurricane. When you are retired, you just head out to safety and wait it out somewhere else. Easy peasy.

I stayed put when Mathew hit and it turned out to be a nothing burger. ;)

That will work. I strongly advice you to be occupying by August 31st, and to be registering as quickly as possible after that. This is not going to be an easy election to register in Florida.

Be sure to get the federal flood insurance. The federal government basically subsidizes people making poor home owning decisions involving floods, hurricanes, and other water damage. Even if you wait out the hurricane somewhere else, you don't want to lose all the money you poured into a house... When you are a homeowner.
