Given the obvious superiority of NATO weapons, technology, and organizational doctrine, it's not surprising that Putin and his shattered army fear provoking NATO.

Ukraine Latest: Austin Says Putin Doesn't Want to Take On NATO

(Bloomberg) — US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t want to escalate the war into a full-blown conflict with NATO.

Defense Secretary Austin said he doubts Russia will widen its war, such as by attacking missile sites in Poland, because Putin doesn’t want to take on the NATO alliance. “This is a fight that he really doesn’t want to have,” Austin said.

Is it possible that Putin really didn't know how incompetent his troops are, and how outdated his equipment is?

As of late February, a lot of MAGA fat asses just assumed their hero Putin had put together one of history's most formidable militaries.
We understand that the collective IQ of the MAGAs is somewhere between a houseplant and a baby goat.

I have to wonder if Putin was that clueless? Or does he believe his own delusions about being welcomed by Ukrainians?

Yes, I think Putin deludes himself with a messianic vision of a unified greater Holy Russia uniting all Russian speakers.

His mind is gripped by outdated 20th century geopolitics, infused with a religious fervor concerning an imaginary manifest destiny of greater Orthodox Rus empire.

Putie wants the 1980’s back!

well duh... this is not news
Maybe you haven't been on the board in six weeks, but Trump supporters have relentlessly hollered at us that we better stop supporting Ukraine, because Putin might get mad and bring the wrath of the vaunted Russian military down on Europe.

I think at this point, Putin's shattered military is keen to not provoke NATO.

pure fantasy. no one thinks Putin can or will make a move on any NATO state except the warmongers who want us to defend Ukraine so NATO is not "next"

Secretary of Defense Austin: "if you look at Putin's calculus, my view — but my view is that Russia doesn't want to take on the NATO alliance."

Austin continued, "There are 1.9 million forces in NATO. NATO has the most advanced capabilities of any alliance in the world in terms of aircraft, ships, types of weaponry that the ground forces use. So, this is a fight that he [Putin] really doesn't want to have and that would very quickly escalate into another type of competition that no one wants to see."

You also said it was pure fantasy that Putin would invade Ukraine.

A lot of your MAGA buddies have been screaming that we should stop supporting Ukraine because it might make Putin mad, and Putin has an intimidating, formidable army.

Just search the term "don't poke the Russian bear" on this forum from January to March of this year.

The fact is Putin's army is a paper tiger, it has been shattered, and there is no need for MAGA losers to tell us we should be intimidated by Putin

Putin fears NATO, but even more he fears the EU and the civil good governance, freedom, and prosperity it brings.

I also believe that Putin uses NATO the same way that U.S. Reichwing politicians use other groups like illegal immigrants, Muslims, etc. They are useful to scare the populace with and ensure that he stays in power because only he can protect them.

Good questions, I wonder about that as well. Maybe his generals, like Trump's toadies, were keeping the truth from him and only producing the best for his military parades?

I'm a MAGA supporter but I'm a Ukraine supporter too. Pretty much everyone I know has been surprised by Russia's military's ineptness. Almost every expert that I know of thought Russia would crush Ukraine. IN FACT the Biden administration's first response was to offer Zelenskyy a ride out of Ukraine. That isn't something we would do if we thought Ukraine would successfully resist Russia. Zelenkskyy said "I don't need a ride I need weapons" Trump knew Putin was a danger and sent Javelins and the Democrats were blasted him for doing it. You guys sure are revisionist in your thinking. Now if we can thread this needle and help push Russia back to its borders and not start a nuclear war at the same time. I'm not sure the demented old fool in the White House can do that.
