Reagan was the gold standard

Yet he has to be given his due in ending the Cold War, but the likes of Rana will never admit that.

Nope because if you are a real student of history you know the USSR was crumbling from its own problems internally.

Sometimes I think you say shit like this to troll me and make my head explode. The United Fruit Syndicate ran Nicaragua as a their own personal medieval fief. Any attempts by the peasant serfs to obtain any semblance of civil, political, economic or human rights were met with extreme brutality and violence. This led to the rise of the Sandinistas. So no, the Contras were murderers and thugs and it should be pointed out that the Sandinistas had broad popular support from the Nicaraguan people and when the Sandinistas established democratic institutions and were elected out of office they transferred power peacefully. That's a hell of a lot more than you can say about the United Fruit syndicate and their contra thugs did.

There is this ex-army officer that has been doing TV progs where he walks huge distances. He's already done the Himalayas and the Nile and has turned to the Americas. The last one I saw was where he walked from Guatemala to Nicaragua via Honduras. Honduras is fucking lethal whilst Nicaragua is poor but relatively safe these days.

Well the you no regards for human life or American values of liberty and values and your ignorant of the history as the United Fruit syndicate were ruthless fascist bastards who would kill anyone who jeopardized their Central American fiefs and it was US support of that syndicate that forced the Sandinista to turn to the socialist for support earning an enduring enmity towards the US. Using your logic Hitler was ok cause he killed communist.

I didn't know Hitler was running the Contras.......I thought he was dead......

So you admit he had style. That's what the OP is about. And he had it better than any I can think of.

Personally I think the office is best represented by someone who has a stellar intellect and shows it, but that wasn't reagan.

There have been plenty of charming, likeable politicians who develop a cult of personality. reagan was one of them.

Well Reagan was certainly not in the same league as Washington, Lincoln and FDR. Those gentlemen represent the gold standard.

Impossible to say. There was no TV back then much less twitter and Facebook. As I suspected this thread degenerated to a 'who was the best president', which was not the intent of the OP.
JFK used the office as his personal haram so he certainly had no respect for it.
Don't know enuf about LBJ although his crime of knowing full well there no incident with the Gulf of Tonkin Incident was far worse than the petty crime of covering a third rate burglary.
Carter had the social graces of a country bumpkin insulting Mexico's president joking about Montezuma's Revenge, Clinton allowed his White House staff to do blow, as in coke, on the job, not to mention actual bj's, Obama's obvious hatred of America was an insult to the office.
I'd argue that only Ford, Reagan , Bush Sr and Bush Jr, as crappy a president as he was are the only ones in my lifetime that had respect for the office and of those four Reagan was far and away the best for reasons pointed out in the OP.

That was the point of the OP. And correct.

Nope, supporting the communist USSR was okay because they were killing Nazis. Guess we should have a flowchart...

Yes there were pressures most certainly but Reagan acted as a catalyst by forcing the Soviet Union to face the fact that it couldn't afford to continue the Cold War. Of course Gorbachev helped as well no doubting that.

You won't acknowledge that fact because you hate Reagan with a vengeance and allow that to cloud your judgement.
