The Dixiecrats raison d'etre was segregation. They made no bones whatsoever about that.

I'm actually laughing out loud at your defense of Lott. Seriously. To pretend that there was something more to Strom's run for president than his defense of segregation is the worst revisionism I've seen from someone who should know better in a long long while.

I expect as much from Dixie, but not from you. While it is funny, it's also kind of sad.

You're right, they aren't comparable at all. Trent Lott was not intending anything racist or in support of segregationist policy with his remarks, and Reid was being blatantly racist and full of stereotypical prejudice about black people. So you are absolutely right, there is no comparing the two!

And, of course, many right-wingers are comparing what Reid said to Trent Lott's assertion that America would have been better off if Strom Thurmond, running on a segregationist platform, had been elected president in 1948. Lott's remark was also an insult to black people -- unless you're arguing that he believed Thurmond's election in 1948 was intended to save white people from their own racist selves.

Reid said something harsh about my people. But I think his heart was in the right place, and I'm ready to accept his apology.

Again, Trent Lott never said this! It is a ridiculous assertion on its face, because A.) Strom Thurmond did not run for president solely on segregation, and if he had, it is most likely he would not have enjoyed re-election until he was well into his 90s! And B.) Many of Strom's historically Conservative principles remain relevant to what most Conservatives believe would have made America "better off!" It was "construed" as a "racist" comment by the LEFT! But the assertion itself is absurd!

Reid made clear where his heart is... he thinks Obama got elected because he doesn't speak with 'negro dialect' and has lighter skin! In his heart, he doesn't think America could elect a "black" man otherwise, because HE feels that way himself! Just like MOST racist hypocrite liberals!

As i stated, no question that was a part of their platform. Strom (and the dixiecrats) also stood strongly for states rights, for a lot less of the New Deal type policies, a strong military, balanced budgets etc...

Yes, segregation was an issue for them. But given that Strom had renounced that part of his past prior to Lott making his comments, I think it is a case of Dems seeing what they wanted to see in order to paint Lott as a racist.

There is a black dialect, its not a racist thing, it is just true. There is a southern dialect. Not all black people speak in that dialect, just as not all southern people speak in that dialect...
