I believe the Bible to be the inspired word of God. I know that puts me a notch or two down (or more) in the eyes of most people on this site but that is who I am. I cannot ignore the teaching of the Bible on the three areas described. Sexual immorality, including but not limited to homosexuality is sinful (Rom. 1), I must see the importance placed by God on unborn human life (Ex. 21 among other OT references) even if they are not specifically mentioned in he N T, and while Christ ate and associated with tax collectors (publicans) He never condoned any sinful practice (see Zacchaheus Lk. 19) they might have been participating in. Yes, I am old fashioned enough to believe that per-marital sex is wrong, I believe homosexuality is wrong and I believe abortion is murder. Tax me all you want as long as you use it well (SS, Medicare, -Cade, etc.).
And yes Prof. Baxter, I do realized that at 47 I am a shrinking demographic. It worries me, yes. The world that my young son will grow up in scares me to death. But I can't change who I am or what I believe.
Which brings me to the T-word..." Tolerance." I'll start by stating that I try to be tolerant but am far from perfect in that regard. Many who claim the name of Christ show so much hatred for those that oppose them. Hardly a "love your enemies" approach you have to admit. One must "turn the other cheek" but it has never been taught that one must needlessly allow abuse. And as far as the proclamation of Christ that the one without sin should "cast the first stone" it is true that he said that ... But it was to expose the motivation behind the religious zealots of the day. But once again he did not condone the woman's sin (sexual immorality) but instructed her to go her way and "sin no more."
One final thought before I climb off my soap box. As one who claims the name of Christ I will not be politically silent. I realize that my convictions put me in not such good company at times. But to others who claim the name of Christ I want to say please act more like it (Eph. 4:1). So much of what we say or do reflects upon the One we're supposed to be representing. Also mind that Christians have never been promised that they'd be in the majority but he opposite is true (Matt. 7:13-14). As I climb down off my soap box I am reminded of why I so rarely go off on one of these rants. It changes little. But this is a good place to vent and once in a while a guy's gotta vent. Thanks Damo.
