Six reasons to study comparative world religions

When Hume questions you why don't you threadban them as well and then start attacking them as you do me. You know. Where you threadban me from a thread because I've pointed out something you didn't know and then you proceed to attack me.

You keep doing this Cypress.

What kind of "morality" do you think that is?
Why do you whine like a child, Perry? This is why I know you've lied about your education. You lack the maturity and self-discipline to complete a college degree much less anything higher.

Did you actually complete those degrees but suffered a traumatic brain injury? A stroke? Drowning and it took too long to resuscitate you?

If you really did earn a PhD, then what happened to you?

Being able to restrain oneself from theft, murder, and rape is an ethical bar so low it barely clears the floor.

Someone who can restrain themselves from those actions hardly merits a pat on the back.

I think our ethos and values have advanced way beyond those simple maxims.
I do not. You asked where morals came from. I answered.

Wait, you think the only values worth having is to be able to restrain oneself from murder, rape, and theft?
I said nothing about restraint. I said, moral or ethical principles are based on very simple things like not taking someone's life or property.

Values are totally different. I doubt a random group of 10 people would find many shared values.

Constant whining and venting of petty grievances are generally only something teenagers and Donald Trump do.

Inventing fictional message board biographies has always been a popular pastime on jpp

I think humans share a lot of universal values:

A lot of them are enshrined in the United Nations Declaration of Universal Human Rights

Ethical and moral codes of conduct and legal standards in most societies are rooted in religious traditions.

To overcome our misconceptions and ignorance about the beliefs of others.

To better comprehend the human potential for self-transcendence.

To better understand our culture, which in the western case is rooted in the Abrahamic traditions.

To achieve a better global perspective of humanity.

To help cultivate and frame our own beliefs and philosophy of life.
Can you explain self-transcendence for me, C?
Is it something that one seeks to accomplish after self-realization?

It's not a term that we used a lot in business school.

I would describe it the desire some people have to improve themselves beyond the material requirements of physical life, usually involving the abstract or the transcendent. It might include self-improvement, introspection, meditation, seeking some sort of higher truth

There are people like Trump who only care immediate physical gratification; they only care about material possession, wealth, luxurious comfort. trophy wives. I don't think everyone is like that.

Half the people on this forum do not have democracy as a value.

The existence of social deviants doesn't mean values aren't universal in some sense.

As a concept, most people like the idea of representative government accountable to the people. The Soviet Union held sham elections to give themselves a veneer of respectability. Russia held sham elections in occupied Crimea and Donbass because they knew that self-determination is a basic expectation of the civilized world at large.

And I think forcing out Biden is a violation of democracy since primary voters wanted him.
