Six reasons to study comparative world religions

Ethical and moral codes of conduct and legal standards in most societies are rooted in religious traditions.

To overcome our misconceptions and ignorance about the beliefs of others.

To better comprehend the human potential for self-transcendence.

To better understand our culture, which in the western case is rooted in the Abrahamic traditions.

To achieve a better global perspective of humanity.

To help cultivate and frame our own beliefs and philosophy of life.
but morality is rational and trancends all religions.

you can stop trying to push abrahamism on everyone.

Where do you think most of our values and ethos ultimately come from?

I know that self-preservation, protecting one's offspring, cooperating for mutual defense and food/resource acquisition are evolutionary adaptations.

I'm talking about the more sophisticated values and ethos humans seem to have developed.
morality is rational and be rediscovered quite easity if you're not an idiot.

you're just trying to tie morality to insanity like Zionism.

your masonic mission is to keep religion violent and actual morality undiscussed.

you're a broken record of dysgenic ignorance.

but morality is rational and trancends all religions.
It's not a question of which, if any, religion are correct about ritual practice and the afterlife.

It's a widely accepted historical fact that religion was the cultural medium through which many of our values and ethos were transmitted to us.

You weren't just sitting on your couch one day when a system of values and an ethos popped into your brain. If your parents were your role model, where did they get it from? Even the devout militant atheist Richard Dawkins calls himself a cultural Christian because he has inherited the ethos, values, and cultural milieu of the west's 2000 year experience with Judeo-Christianity

Okay. Lost the point here.
You said democracy, liberty, and representative government was not a widely held value.

I said that people vote with their feet to show it is. Almost all immigration and defections went from totalitarian dictatorships towards democracies, and there was very little reverse traffic going in the opposite direction.

Everyone who tried to scale and breach the Berlin Wall were East Germans, not West Germans.

Learning what others believe has helped me understand my own path. I'd love to take an online comparative religions course. Let me know, please, if you run across one sometime.

I agree.

The best two I have taken is 'Cultural Literacy for Religion: Everything the Well Educated Person Should Know', and 'The Meaning of Life: Perspectives from the World's Great Intellectual Traditions'. These are produced by the Teaching Company and might be available on streaming video for free from your library

That guy is super obsessed with you. He even mentioned you on a thread about how guys take a leak. Why does he think about your plumbing at random times?
If I wasn't here on this board I don't know what he would do! He seethes with resentment and reads and tries to respond to everything I write.

I hope this guy has a shrink to talk to!

Perry seems to either genetically mentally deficient or suffered some type of severe head trauma. His claims about having a PhD and a successful job are belied by the fact he has the emotional development of a teenager.

He attacks Cypress because Cypress is everything Perry is not; intelligent, educated and curious. Curiosity being an indicator of intelligence along with creativity. While Perry is good at Googling answers, he needs someone to kick start him on what to look up since his creative skills are severely lacking.

I took a few religion courses in college including a comparative religion course but that was almost 50 years ago. Khan Academy has some religion courses, but not a Comparative Religion course per se.

By comparing human beliefs, including differing religions, I believe that the basis of human spirituality can be better understood.

  • Comparative religion involves systematic comparison of doctrines, practices, and impacts of world religions.
  • It explores the origins and similarities shared between different religious traditions.
.....Comparative religion explores the fundamental aspects of religious beliefs and practices, as well as the similarities and differences between different traditions. By studying the doctrines, practices, and historical origins of religions, researchers can develop a more comprehensive understanding of human spirituality and the sacred. This field of study allows for a deeper examination of the diverse cultural perspectives on religion and provides valuable insights into the global tapestry of faith.

He might not have a PhD in geochem, but he has a PhD in frantic Googling. He is constantly jumping up and down :yay: to get my attention :yay:, which might be an issue for him to discuss with mental health professionals.

It would be good if Perry had some professional mental health care, I doubt he'd listen to them. He claims to know more than anyone else.

you're blathering about nothing I said.

I said morality trancends all religions.

religions got some of it right, that's all.

as worldly organizations they have all been corrupted by Masonic Keynesian fascists like you.

Yes, Fredo, you blathered that earlier but you didn't provide a definition of morality much less any examples.

Do you think Trump grabbing women by the pussy is moral? Having sex with 15-17 year old sex slaves on Pedo Island? Breaking his oath to the Constitution by seeking to violently overthrow the US government?

What is this universal human morality that transcends all religions, Fredo?

morality is a set of beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that facilitate voluntary, cooperative and mutually beneficial relationships.

Irrelevant.

The only thing that's relevant is how you and society at large became aware of it and adopted it.

The laws of mechanics and laws of relativity transcend humanity. But it took physicists and the institutions of science to organize and ingrain the knowledge of it in us.

Systems of ethics have always been around. Just because your favorite religion codifies them does not mean they invented it.

So you agree that religion is the medium through which many of our values and ethos are culturally transmitted.

A moral relativist by definition cannot possibly believe there is an objective moral standard that transcends opinion and popular vote. An objective moral standard is the basis of world religions.

The ethics of paleolithic hunters or Bronze age societies would probably shock us. Weak or sick babies would be abandoned for wild animals to eat, ritual child sacrifice was widely accepted practice, warfare, slavery, and looting were widely accepted practices.
