Master? Master what? Kids today are lost if the cash register doesn't tell them how much change to give.
So schools don't have chalk boards today? Our world was not cut and dried. We had ambitions, more than many kids do today.
Why didn't we? I walked a mile to school every day, then passed papers after school and that was at least 5 miles. How many kids do you see passing papers today?

and didn't go much further than that to go to uni.
It was essentially flat, neither up or downhill hill either way,
and it only snowed a few time a year.
I couldn't tell the usual school hardship stories to my kids because
I had things easier than they did.
Instead, I went with the growing up in the Depression stories,
but their grandparents blew my cover on that one too.
I thought that there were certain things that parents traditionally lied to their kids about.
and didn't go much further than that to go to uni.

Word processing programs? BFD! They should at least know how to add and subtract.
Yeah, it was about a mile to our middle school, which has been torn down. Kids are bussed to the new schools, or mommy or daddy drives them to school.

What's wrong with funding such programs at schools? By the way, these programs don't pay participants to be in them, the funding is to allow them to operate just like other classes and programs in public schools do.
