So, let Russia have as much as they can get? This war only started because of American interference, which was especially clear back during Ukraine's Euromaidan back in 2014. Can't change the past, but Trump seems to finally be realizing that Russia's demands to settle the conflict aren't going to change, and that continuing to finance the western Ukrainian government's war will only cost U.S. taxpayers more money and kill more Ukrainians. A good article on the subject:

As Trump backs away, Russia puts sabotaged Istanbul deal back on the table
With Trump pulling back from the proxy war, Ukraine and NATO are forced to confront their abandonment of the Istanbul peace talks three years ago.www.aaronmate.net
Most of it's behind a paywall, but here's the part that isn't:

For a brief period, Kyiv and allied European capitals were hopeful that President Trump’s public frustration with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and threats of new sanctions on his government meant that the US was not abandoning the Ukraine proxy war after all.
That moment has now passed. In the aftermath of last week’s first Russia-Ukraine talks in three years, and a follow-up phone call between Trump and Putin on Monday, the US president is no longer talking tough against Moscow. Instead, the growing consensus is that Trump is set on walking away from a conflict that he has repeatedly stressed is “not my war.” According to European officials, “Trump never seemed invested in joining sanctions on Russia,” and his threats “appeared largely performative.” Their new impression is that Trump believes that “the war [is] Europe’s problem.”

Unless Russia's last deal has truly expired, they only wanted a bit more territory beyond what they already control. What's more, Russia would also be -giving back- some territory, as it has some territory that is not part of the 4 regions that is already mainly controls. It frustrates me to no end that this war would never have even started if the U.S. hadn't been so arrogant to begin with, but there may still be a chance that Ukraine would get to keep a port on the black sea, Odessa.
