I flipped only one over so you could see the bar.

On the other the comb is attached to the bar.
 
But as I recalled it had some sort of divider going down from the top bar that the bees built combs on both sides of , did not notice that in your pictues or did I miss it.
If the weather holds up I'll do some better pictures today and include a few of the clean bars so people can see what we are talking about.

yeah I am going with the top bar method then.

your hive looka a bit more tapered in at the bottom than what I am used to though. Is that an improvement ?

Also my uncle had the hives on pipe posts with yuckemstick on the pipes to keep critters out of the hive from the ground. bugs and parasites I think.
