South gets a bum rap for racism

"New Yorkers tend to be more racist against other immigrant or minority groups"

You just said you've never been to New York, therefore you don't have a clue about their general attitudes

"There aren't a large percentage of blacks in NYC, compared to the rest of the country"

What are you babbling about? NY has a much higher concentration of blacks, than most areas in the United States. Ever been to Kansas? Wyoming? Hawaii? Etc.

"....so the use of the "n word" is not as prevalent."

You've never been to NYC, so you don't know what your talking about. I'll give you a little hint, Dixster. Using the "N" word consistently and openly in public, is widely - almost universally - frowned upon in the major urban areas of the northeast, west, upper midwest, and pacific coast. Its only down there, where Jarod went to school in Alabama, and where I lived on the Gulf Coast, where the N were is still nominally acceptable to be used in public.

I assumed he was comparing us with the South, which does have a higher black population. But no, we're not exactly Kansas here. He's so stupid.

And I never hear words for Italians, or Jews, or the Irish, or anybody. It's just not acceptable here. It just galls me that he would say I'm a liar if I deny it. What a f'ing idiot. He's never been to NY. I'm not surprised!

I didn't think there was a whole lot of public displays of anti-italian or anti-irish crap anymore.

As you said, there's no denying that racism exists everywhere. Outside the deep south, parts of the midwest, and allegedly rural areas of western NY according to Hiplew, that latent racist language tends to be under the radar.

Anti-Italian is like, pretty unheard of, seriously, as far as I know. Anti-Irish? I mean, what century is that from?

Maybe it's still a big thing down South, and that's why he thinks this. I really don't know.

LOL
Doesn't sound to me like Dixie gets out of the deep south much.

Yep, I spent a couple of summers there. I've never been to Boston or LA, but I've read newspapers, and I know they have had racial unrest. What is your point, that no one can have an opinion unless they have lived there? Have you ever lived in Alabama? If not, shut up!

you have read newspapers and other media accounts of racism in Los Angeles and Boston.... and that makes your opinion that there is racism in those towns totally valid. I have read newspapers and media accounts of profound racism in Alabama but you want me to believe that there is no more there than anywhere else.

whatever.

Personally I think the hidden types of racism can be even more damaging. While open racism is damaging to the feelings, quiet racism is damaging to livelihoods.

And the final stake is driven through the Con arguments against affirmative action.

Since latent racism is still a major problem, and its "hiden" and beneath the radar screen, AA is still needed. There is still latent racism that affects the livelyhood of blacks, and since it "hidden" and under the radar, a criminal charge of discrimination is typically very hard to prove in a court of law.

Uh-oh.

Jarod said:
I am guilty however of not caring as much about news of a shooting in the hood as I would about a shooting in a nicer neighborhood... I think that is common, because it explains why the media would cover one more than the other.

And Alex, I am as guilty as the next person as not paying as much attention to a shooting, not necessarily just in the "hood" but in the poorer sections of cities (be it white or black) as I do to those in nicer neighborhoods.

I thought about you two this morning when I was coming in. I really don't see how you can't care as much about shootings just because they are in the inner city. Especially since one of you professes to be some sort of Christian minister. People are people whether they are in an urban area or suburban area. You should keep that in mind the next time you just dismiss a death in an urban area: that person had a mother, a family and dreams.

Anyway, They were talking about another incident where the police shot someone to death in the Bronx. The cops were apprehending some people (I don't know why) and several witnessess in the neighborhood said they saw & heard the kid (~20) tell the cops he had a gun, he gave it to them, they took it, beat him down anyway (apparently he was <120) and they shot him 4 times. It was really awful because the person telling the story used to change the kids diapers. But basically they were saying that the newspaper accounts were completely wrong and that he had already given them the gun. But this may be an interesting story to see unfold over the next few months.

I think that AA promotes it and gives those with that hidden racism an excuse to continue it. That it has gone as far as it can, but it is time to change it, not to eliminate it, but change it to promote the welfare of the underclass regardless of race. By defining it based on race it focuses it, and gives those with the hidden racism excuse to continue, to "understand" that even the government thinks them less than they...

And thus continues the argument "against" affirmative action based on such things as skin pigment.

Just another reason I am pleased not to live in a big city LadyT.

My county had it's first murder in 3 years a couple of months ago. An illegal immigrant killed another illegal immigrant.

My town hasn't had a murder in like a decade.

If somebody steals a pair of sunglasses, it makes it into the crime report of the local paper

Yeah pretty much the same here. someone drove off without paying for $20 in gas. someone else stole $13.28 worth of stuff at wally world. and for the big news a cow was shot and killed!!!!

LOL Classic!

I was reading in our crime report a few weeks ago, that somebody got fined for feeding a doughnut to a sea lion! I guess there's a city ordinance against mistreating marine wildlife LOL

And that is the one newspaper for the entire county.
Of course in all fairness I guess the cow is a big deal since this county has more cows than people.

Next thing you know, you'll have buxom blonde women in lettuce leaf bikinis on street corners, protesting the killing of your cows.

I've always wanted to be English. I like their accents.
The English are vastly overrated, though I tend to give chicks with English accents extra 'hotness' points (with exception for cockney accent).

LOL, it must quaint to live in small towns like that. The town I grew up in had a little over 30K people in and I though it was small.
