The Cost of War: Interesting perspective

You should switch to the app side!!:) It's way better.

Can't switch much and still work remotely.
I am pretty much a project manager for a couple of major apps. One of which was the largest client server app in existance when it was introduced about 7 years ago. Not sure how it rates now.
We are using the biggest honkin servers Sun can build, and working them hard.

WOw. That's cool.

Is anyone in your organization using Ruby?

Nope, it that a DB system ? We use mostly informix and in house generated stuff. Our apps are all in house generated. Well I think HR uses Hewit stuff...And I am sure the finiancial types like spin use off the shelf projection packages....

Ruby is the new cool object oriented server side scripting language, invented by a japanese dude, and it comes complete with an MVC controller and way to autogenerate database schemas, and the object persistence layer automatically from code.

I used to be a java guy, now, Im just doing database queries for reports, Im looking for the "next big thing" to jump into and maybe start my own company.

Sounds good AHZ, go for it.
Too many of these new Object orientied scripting things out there now for me to keep up with. I just follow where my job leads me. Plan on retiring soon, so not really concerned with staying current on the latest things.

I do queires and such in Informix, but that is about it in DB. Of course I started on DB when DBASE first came out :) Then Fox script for Dbase....I could do all the informix stuff with some digging but not worth it to me at this point. I have the Informix manuals, If I have a good manual I can do anything, just might take me a bit longer....

The first programming I did was in the early 70's on HP mini computers, was pure machine language. Then moved into basic. algol, fortran, cobol, pascal, C, etc...Been out of the pure coding for about 10 years now.

Neato.

You never had to work with punch cards did you? That sounds insane.

Lol...

Damn I am going to date myself here...I did when I first got out of the Army...way back about 1969...Worked for a small company that produced Micro Integrated circuits...'Electromask Inc...they sold out to TRW from Texas...we used punch cards and tapes to run the archaic computer systems that ran the the Camera!
:o

You poor creature!

yep have worked with obth Punch and "Mark Sense" cards...

The first hard drive I worked with held one entire megabyte on 12 inch or so platter. I predate microprocessors....the first CPU I worked on was build entirely of 7400 series chips, no microprocessors...
Unless you wanna count electromechanical CPU's :)
I also remember the first commercial optical punch tape reader ....

Man. Now we don't even have to think about memory management anymore. stack, heap, what? It's weird though, they keep making up new higher level languages. These m.i.t kids don't want to work for a living I guess. "we need another layer of abstraction!"
