Whatever cippie...!

Gunny: "It isn't attacking a vet when a vet can't come up with some really simple answers he should know. You don't have the lingo of a vet, and your vague answers can all be pulled from google in a minute."

It's unfortunate Gunny, but all too often on message boards, I've seen posers invent phony vietnam combat careers. It happens.

Like I stated I was not a 'career soldier' but was a VN era vet...like it or not...but carry on with your BS anyhoo...it fits the Lib agenda!

The USAF flew out of the Phillipines and Thailand during the Vietnam War. There wasn't a USAF base in Saigon.

What was the major drawback to using a starlight?

Since you ask fair and comprehensive questions I will respond...the major drawback to the Starlight scope in the proto phase was weight/bulk/grainy pic/and eye damage when exposed to severe light that may appear...later on I believe they(ya they did) improve the faults...this was after my time!

Since you were Af I would guess Saigon or maybe India as my brother(who was AF in the area) advised me AF flew supply out of India and Pakistan..

Huh? India was effectively an avowed enemy of the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. They were aligned mostly, with the Soviet Union. We didn't have any airbases in India. And, we didn't have any airbases in Pakistan that I'm aware of. The airforce flew out of Thailand, during the vietnam war. As Gunny pointed out.

I would think a vietnam vet would know all this.

Since the question was asked, I did a little homeworking. Apparently, we DID have a small "base" in Pakistan close to the Indian border.

Can't find a thing on having one in India, but it was probably the same base with India being dragged into the identifier due to the proximity. That, of course, is just a guess on my part.

True enough. I usually extend the benefit of doubt unless I see something questionable that I would like clarified.

I was assigned to Camp Roberts/Hunter Liggett After Attending OCS Engineering(1966)...I spent from 1964-1965 in Binlach Germany(Tank Commander M-60A1)...Czechoslovakian Border surveillance...7th Army Amor Division(Cav)...I was assigned to the proto type Starlight Scope research team with Litton Industries while at Hunter Liggett...did TDY's to S/E Asia... support and training on use and operation of said systems...also did combat research on Armor Tank rounds(HEP,Heat ap etc),systems(Target aquisition)...I was never involved with sniper scopes/rifles! other than maybe the 'proto starlight' that had use later on! As for going on about classified I was just playing with Stripey to see if he was for real...and you are correct about the AF flying out of Thailand they also flew support/supply drops out of India and Pakistan early on,and for the comment that the AF did not have a base in Saigon ya are correct...albeit they did land there!...My brother was AF and did supply runs and drops with the AC130...as for your VN era Jargon comment...sorry Gunny I was Army you Marine...all is good...I just speak different...You obviously retired from the Marines and have carried your Jargon into Civilian life...remember I was in service from 1964-1968 not a career soldier! Have a nice day Gunny!

PS: I have no idea if stripey was a vet or not...he came in here and started attacking my history and service...so I just returned his obnoxious behavoir!

Fair enough.

Essentially correct. It was bulky, heavy, and only gave 4x magnification. To my knowledge they have yet to come up with a cure for having a light shined on ANY night vision equipment.
