The vast majority of gun owners in this country are law-abiding citizens

so gun owners are all mouth breathing neandrethal macho males waiting to be heroes?

Not all of them. One of the dirty little secrets the screamers like you don't want the rest of us to know is that plenty of dues-paying NRA members support things like the assault weapons ban under which Holmes would not have been able to purchase The AR15. These weapons are not needed by anyone sane. That leaves you out. Sane people do not need what are basically machine guns to "protect their families". Who's coming for your family, the Russian mob? Living in a state of paranoid delusion is a mental condition you should get help for. Unfortunately you have the NRA, without whose millions of dollars and foaming st the mouth ranting, you would not be setting policy for sane people. You shouldnt be.

For the hunters out there, like Barry Goldwater said, if you need a semi-automatic weapon to shoot Bambi its time to get out of the woods. Again most hunters agree.

It is not up to you to decide what I need or don't need. There are lots of things I don't think people need, but they have the freedom to buy them. The guy was a nut plain and simple and like Rahmbo the Ballerina said, never let a good crisis go to waste. They hadn't even gotten the bodies out of the theater yet and the American hating left wingers were screaming for more gun control.

You have probably never fired a gun, so you wouldn't understand. You are obviously ignorant about them.

But, in the interest of compromise since you feel so strongly about this and claim to want to compromise, I will make a deal with you. I will submit to any gun control law you want if you agree to submit to my controls over abortion. Don't worry, I won't abolish your right to have one, but I think some sensible restrictions would be allowable to prevent the senseless murder of 1 million babies a year by abortion.

Remember, more babies are killed through abortion than guns. Just let me know puddin

just a little history lesson for you, the 2nd Amendment is not about hunting. It's about the CITIZENS being as well armed as the military to maintain FREEDOM. Your desire to hold on to the fantasy of assault weapons bans because 'sane people don't need them', makes you a retard. the reason you have this ideology is you're a coward, plain and simple. you're afraid to fight for your life, afraid to defend your life. This is evident because of your support and desire for that strong federal government. You need MEN with GUNS to protect you and your rights because you can't do it for yourself. What you need to do is accept that you're a failure instead of forcing your weakness on others. and fuck NRA members and hunters. they have about as much clue about freedom and the 2nd Amendment as you do.

The idea that the founders were thinking of arming every nutball with a semi-automatic so they can slaughter our children is as ludicrous as your delusion that being terrified to leave your home without an arsenal, as you are, makes you brave and not living in fear makes you a coward.

I think that STY's answers on this thread are very telling. When we talk about gun control in this country, all of the pundits always claim that anyone supporting gun control will lose votes because of the hunters. I know a few hunters myself, in fact my uncle was a hunter all his life. My step-father was a hunter as well. I haven't known any nutballs like STY though. How much does STY have in common with your average hunter? Is your average hunter fantasizing about overthrowing the government? I doubt it.

This rich paranoid fantasy life that the nuts lead where they are stockpiling weapons for the day they take on the United States government is laughable. Of course STY would be vaporized immediately. Sane people know this.

Most hunters and even many dues-paying NRA members would and do support the Assault Weapons Ban, Why are we allowing the inmates to run the asylum?

Most hunters I know are not enamored with the assault rifles. But they are told it is a slippery slope and many of them believe it.

I am a hunter and a recreational shooter. Banning high capacity magazines doesn't bother me. The assault weapon ban bothered me because it addressed things that are largely cosmetic. One of the criteria for calling something an assault rifle was the ability to fix a bayonet on the rifle. I haven't heard of many murders by bayoneting.

A few years ago if you had mentioned limiting magazine capacity I would have argued vociferously against it but a few years later (as in now) ... Not so much. But as to the assault weapons ban, I was and for now continue to be against it for the very reasons you state...mainly that it is largely cosmetic. I do not own an assault weapon (as described by the would be banners) now but have in the past. But just because I don't own one now doesn't mean that I won't purchase one if a good deal comes along. But I am against a ban because the (even though I am told it it illogical) 'slippery slope' theory applies. Let's say they get to ban certain firearms based on cosmetics and they do restrict magazine capacity (which I am not necessarily against) ... You still have people like BAC and that "I wanna make gun laws for the entire country even though I'm only a mayor" Bloomberg who want to ban all semi-autos and guns that load with clips. You can see where people who are strong 2nd ammendment advocates don't even want to let them get a foot hold.

Oh, when it comes to hunting my absolute favorite gun to deer hunt with is my muzzleloader. One clean shot, one clean kill. After that I prefer to hunt with my bow. I haven't participated in a deer rifle season in almost 10 years.

But when it comes to recreational/therapeutic shooting I get out the rifles and pistols.

I still hunt with a rifle. A few years ago I finally got what I consider the ultimate deer rifle. A Ruger #1 in .270 Win. I have never been handicapped by hunting with a single shot rifle. If I missed with the first shot, when the deer was standing still, I certainly ain't gonna hit it when its running full speed thru the woods.

My not hunting with a rifle is definitely not by my design. While I prefer to hunt with the smoke pole and stick and string I surely do miss getting to hunt during rifle season. I got married 10 years ago and the week of Thanksgiving (our gun season and one of my weeks off) is the best time to go to the in-laws. So I just take the Ruger 22 and squirrel hunt on my FIL's land while I'm there.

I have never heard of therapeutic shooting, I guess one has to enjoy guns in order to enjoy shooting. It escapes me.

I am lucky that Alabama's gun season is as long as it is. Bow season starts in mid-October and runs until jan 31st. Gun season starts the saturday before Thanksgiving and also ends Jan. 31st. We are allowed 2 deer per day, with one being a buck. When I am able to hunt more, we basically use venison as our red meat for the year.

Let's send them to a psychiatrist and pass the assault weapons ban again so that we can save lives. There are other forms of therapy that can be utilized to save minds.

It is therapeutic in several ways. First, the meticulous attention to detail takes your mind off the crap of day to day life. The effort to shoot accurately can be almost a zen like experience.

Plus busting cans, water jugs and bottles can just be great run. And if you have the exploding targets, you get the fun of firecrackers added in.

For me it is also a family activity.

Whenever my stress levels get high, I shoot. I mentioned before it was what I would do after finals when I was in college. That's what I mean by it. Some people cook, some clean, some knit, some swim, .... I target shoot or skeet shoot. I don't do it so much anymore probably because I lead a relatively stress free life.

During the previous assault weapon ban I still went to the range quite often. There is plenty of fun and therapeutic value to be had without assault rifles. As long as there is no ban on a .22 semi auto (Ruger 10/22) my daughter will still have a blast at the range.
