Time To Dump The Second Amendment?

Hello Dutch,

OK that's good. You've used the founding documents to support your point. Now let me select a few quotes that support mine.

"the consent of the governed, --- to effect their Safety and Happiness."

That's the thing. When the people are ready for change, we should have it.

The people are ready. If it wasn't for the NRA we would be able to move ahead to effect our safety.

Every time this happens there is a spike of support for stronger gun control laws. After the spike, the level of support drops back down but it never really drops as low as it was before. Overall, the level of support for doing something grows.

It is only logical to assume if that continues a point will be reached when the country actually does something.

I, and millions of other Americans, support that.

Demonizing the NRA is silly. They aren't even on the list of Top DC lobbies: https://www.opensecrets.org/federal-lobbying/top-lobbying-firms?cycle=a

The Democrats whip out the NRA card just like the Republicans whip out the Marxist/Socialist card. The main problem, IMO, is that most Americans don't trust political parties that put themselves ahead of all Americans.

Consider that 70% of Americans refuse to be Democrats. Why do you believe that is true?

Hello Dutch,

Democrats strongly support restoring voting rights to felons who have served their full sentence.

... but not their rights to self-defense. :)

There's also the small matter of effectiveness of their efforts. Republicans say they support a lot of things too but don't really do much with it.

Consider the Republican platform and compare it to their primary efforts: https://gop.com/about-our-party/

Republicans believe in liberty, economic prosperity, preserving American values and traditions, and restoring the American dream for every citizen of this great nation. As a party, we support policies that seek to achieve those goals.

Our platform is centered on stimulating economic growth for all Americans, protecting constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms, ensuring the integrity of our elections, and maintaining our national security. We are working to preserve America's greatness for our children and grandchildren.

The Republican Party's legacy -- we were originally founded in 1854 for the purpose of ending slavery -- compels us to patriotically defend America's values. As the left attempts to destroy what makes America great, the Republican Party is standing in the breach to defend our nation and way of life

Heritage Foundation, other BS peddlers, apathy.

And of course the same question should be asked of the Republican party. Why do most Americans choose not to join that party?

I would say that is because of people who are quite well informed, and they care about others, so they refuse to join the Republican party.

That's old. The Republican Party has no platform.

I could write them an accurate one. It would be very simple. 5 words.

Stick it to the libs.

Exactly; 70% of Americans refuse to be Republicans. Why? Same reason: they're all fucking lying scumbags who only serve themselves, not Americans as whole per their oaths.

While that truism angers some to violence or to protest, it only causes me to sigh like Pogo and express a similar sentiment regardless if it's stripping Americans of their rights or polluting the planet and leaving it for our descendants to clean up.

Why would they do that? Sure, I can see how fucking assholes like the Republican leadership would want it, but why would millions of Americans vote for them?

It's highly likely that the Republicans will take over the House next January and have a shot at the Senate. Sure, the margins will be narrow, but Americans voters will give it to them. Why? If the Republicans are really so bad and the Democrats are really so awesome as you keep pushing, why would most Americans kick out the Democrats and install the Republicans?

The 2nd Amendment is too specific to current circumstances at time of its writing. It is not about the structure of government and should not be there. Repeal it? Difficult. Legislate it out of influence.

I want to thank the people here for posts like this. I screen shot them and keep them in a file. While it won’t matter in Oklahoma how I vote (the conservative 2nd amendment supporter will win here anyway) I share statements such as this with my friends and relatives who don’t live in such a red state who might make the a silly statement such as, “democrats don’t really want to ban guns.” Mmmm …. OK.
