I don't see how that could happen but I would like to see it happen.

How can voters be pleased with a kneecapped presidency that can't accomplish anything?

How is that going to bring voters out in sufficient numbers after Democrats have been on the defensive for 2 years with little to show for their time?

I see Democrats in a difficult position. They have not been able to gather the support of the non college educated white males. The Republicans have that demographic, and Trump charges up their enthusiasm. Trump can keep on sending tweets after he is out of office. Trump could file papers to run in 2024, start holding rallies, fire them all up and keep them angry, just waiting to vote in 2022.

Plenty of people vote split ticket. Not as many do that as in the past, but plenty of people don't want one party control. Moderation is something that many people still prefer.

That being said, I realize that Trump's populism isn't dead, but the system needed to elect people seems to be.

We are really two nations sharing one government and one land.

We know that we have to live together.

The best thing we can do is to remember that we must share this country, and resign ourselves to accepting that it takes all of us to make America what it is.

Bitter hatred and disrespect is not helpful at all, accomplishes nothing, makes us dysfunctional.

We have big enough differences without adding hatred on top of everything else. We have to try to rise above that.

Our challenge is rediscover respect for one another.

If America is really great then part of that has to mean we respect all Americans. A hateful and bitterly divided nation cannot be great.

1. You always resort to violence

Polite discussion in State politics is an illusion. At the end of this discussion, it really doesn’t matter who’s right or who’s wrong, the person with the superior numbers is going to force their bad ideas on everybody else at gun point. Just imagine doing this in reverse, where you start with a threat instead of ending with it. Nobody would try to be polite about their disagreement under those circumstances.

Since we know we have inferior numbers, and the minority always gets screwed and threatened by democracy, this is exactly what this discussion looks like to us. It begins and ends with the threat of violence, so the fact that we don’t shoot you in the face really speaks volumes to our civility.

You give us absolutely no option for escaping this violence. We are forced to choose between the violence of you, or the violence of someone else. You tell us “Love it or leave it!” or “Move to Somalia!” like I don’t have any right to be left in peace in my own home. The fact of the matter is, if you give us a choice of violence or violence, eventually we’re going to give some violence back to you, and making fun of you on twitter will become the least of your concerns.

I've already made the call. I don't believe in rubbing anything in anyone's face. And besides. It was not a resounding victory. It was a squeaker. If Democrats try to ignore or discount what Republicans are saying then they just fan the fires of division and guarantee stagnation. Democrats have to understand there won't be any sweeping new one-sided legislation. The only way forward for America is down to this: We either work together or nothing gets done. Sounds like you might be making the mistake of conflating street violence with the Democratic party. The fact of the matter is that we often do not know who starts the violence. It always seems to happen late at night after peaceful protests in the day. Sometimes it is provocateurs from the right. Whoever it is, it does not represent the Democratic Party. That association is made by right wing hate peddlers, talking heads whose job it is to whip up emotion just to get attention and sell advertising without a care for the damage they are doing to the soul of the nation. They find one instance and try to claim without basis this is what the whole party is doing. That doesn't pass the smell test. It's cheap stereotyping. Don't fall for it.

America is stronger when we stand together. I believe Democrats, and the President-elect shares this view, should do their best to open the lines of communication with our fellow Americans. We know that America doesn't want all the things we've talked about doing. It wasn't a resounding victory for Democrats. We get the message. What we need to find is what we can agree on that needs to be done. Somehow we have got to move forward. It's time to open up the lines of civil discourse. We stand ready to talk with our friends on the right who can conduct a mutually respectful dialog.

I also understand that, due to the nature of chat boards, it sometimes becomes necessary to exclude some individuals who are only here to vent frustration, and are simply looking for a target upon which to focus hatred. That is sad to see tormented minds, but those of us who came here for an adult conversation are under no obligation to entertain trolls.
