Current ones certainly don’t work absolutely, especially in Red States like where he obtained the gun, but that doesn’t mean the approach should be more guns, statistics in most Blue States proves that fact

And sixty years ago guns weren’t the commodity they are today, the number of guns in circulation was pale by comparison to now, and the type of guns weren’t as deadly

It is unconstitutional to ban or limit any weapon or any accessory to any weapon. That includes any gun.
A pistol from the WW2 era will kill you just as dead as an AR-15.

Anybody can sell a gun in a private sale to whoever they want, and most often the sellers don't care anything about what the buyer is going to do with the gun.
 
This is America. You can get guns. That is what the Supremes think the 2nd Amendment wanted. Some people. lots of them will get shot. It is worth it.
 
If only we could do something about the issue. Until you do it will keep happening. I wonder if trump getting killed by a gun would actually make gun control happen. interesting...

The reasonable solution is, you obviously can't control the guns so you should start trying to control the people instead. That means working to make a society where people aren't motivated to do gun crimes.
