So you want a completely open border with Mexico, to the point that it is legally part of America. You want all the Mexicans to be allowed to cross over the border just like American Southerners can move north. You want no limits on the drugs they can cross the border with. Even hardened Mexican criminals can cross the border, because they would be natural born US citizens in your plan.

And you want us all to pay taxes to support the Mexicans up to our standard of living. All the old Mexicans will get full American style retirement. And on and on.

Fair enough. That all seems a little extreme to me.

Just making the threats weakens our alliances, but I doubt he will do much more. Soon America will have high inflation for trump to rail about.

We have invaded Mexico more than once, and always decided not to keep it. We realized that if we did, we would be stuck with a large number of people who would have the right to change our government through the vote.

Firstly, it's not up to me, Salty, nor is it up to you.

It's up to the people of Mexico, and our elected officials.

If the Mexican government were to apply for annexation, we, the citizens of the United States, would be able to signal our approval or disapproval to our representatives in Congress.

If an agreement is reached, there has historically been a transitory period wherein an applicant is first extended the status is a territory, and pending final approval, they may be admitted to the Union.

At no time will territorials (or newly minted citizens) be allowed to violate American laws, whether state, local, or federal, without being subject to prosecution.

The process exists, has been amended as deemed necessary many times throughout our history, and is something that may well never be called upon regarding Mexico - or Canada, or Greenland, or Outer Mongolia.

You should have known all this already, Salty Walty, but now you do.

No, trump is talking about invading, which means that it is up to the Mexican Army to fight off the US Army.

The people are usually far less willing to compromise than the army or leaders. trump could bribe a limited number of leaders, but trying to bribe all the Mexican people...

And we are back to Diogenes saying that whether we have a completely open border with Mexico should be decided by others.

Which means we could not count on NATO or other allies to save us. We would be completely alone.

Canada has been a good ally, and still has joint control of our air defense. Throwing that away would be a huge loss. Denmark, and Canada are parts of NATO, so we would of course lose our NATO allies. And then there is the effect on other countries seeing that we have given up on allies.

Do you expect Japan or Australia to stand with us if we go this route?

We may see Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan all getting nuclear weapons over the next couple of years.
