US 'no longer technology king'
Demonstration at a recent technology fair in Singapore
Singapore was among the nations ranked higher than the US
The US has lost its position as the world's primary engine of technology innovation, according to a report by the World Economic Forum.

The US is now ranked seventh in the body's league table measuring the impact of technology on the development of nations.

A deterioration of the political and regulatory environment in the US prompted the fall, the report said.

The top spot went for the first time to Denmark, followed by Sweden.

Translation: We have an anti-science republican government. A government that doesn't believe in stem cell research, alternative energy, global warming, or evolution.

Not to worry we still have many consumers that American corporations can make money importing goods and selling us.

"Translation: We have an anti-science republican government. A government that doesn't believe in stem cell research, alternative energy, global warming, or evolution."

Translation of translation: I am a Democrat and I will exagerate the truth or outright lie, because it makes me feel warm and cozy inside.

1) The government funds many lines of stem cell research. They do not fund embryonic stem cell research. Big exageration on your part... and a very common ploy by the left.

2) This government has invested more than any other in alternative energy. Are they perfect? No. But a gross exageration on your part yet again.... another typical line of BS from the left.

3) Global warming. Give you this one, until recently it was true. The left will continue trying to force consensus that Man is the primary source of warming, rather than focusing all efforts on eliminating as much air, water and land pollution as possible. Thus wasting valuable resources on one pointless study after another.

4) You will need to show me evidence that the majority of Republicans think that evolution has not occured.

5) Bottom line: this government is not "anti-science". Science has bounced up against morality before. Some do not believe that science should be able to do whatever it chooses.

This so called report is a friggin joke. They downgraded us for political BS. What a shock, they don't like Bush so they downgrade our country? Too damn funny.

US... according to the brief summary in that article... yes.

"A deterioration of the political and regulatory environment in the US prompted the fall, the report said."

That is simply political BS. What political or regulatory changes have been made that stop tech R & D? Or biotech? None. The only limits that I am aware of are on FEDERALLY funded embryonic stem cell research.... but those limits do not apply to private money.

According to the report .. we didnt just merely fall to number two.. we fell to number 7.. shoot...they should have went all the way and dropped us dead last.. that really would have made a liberals day....

I have read many articles over the last few years about our dropping investment in research, I guess you missed all of them ?

Uhm, don't mean to rain on your "they hate America 'cause they're liberals" circle jerk, guys, but I suggest you check out the World Economic Forum. You'll find that us lefties generally hold it in regard only slightly above the World Bank. It's a cold blooded, pro-business, anti-labor, anti-environmentalist, anti-progress group of prototypical fat cats.

Still it is much like those studies that say that Americans are less happy.

In that case it is a cultural thing. Yes, I work more hours and harder than most of my European counterparts. However, I would not be happy otherwise. When away from work for long periods my thoughts tend to gather on what I should be doing, and how it is building up while I am not there.

Also culturally Americans are less satisfied with the "ordinary" we are taught to continue to plan for the future, to make our lives even "better". Thus there is less often an answer of "satisfied" in the US because of cultural norm rather than actual happiness levels.

In this case it drops the US because we fund certain aspects of science less than they want us to. Whether or not it is "lefty" or capitalistic or "righty" it is a judgement based on what they want to see, not on actual technological levels. It is the funding they base it on.

Simply defending republican policies in knee-jerk fashion, isn't going to cut it. The world economic forum isn't a liberal group. Niether is this American industry trade group:

"The study (World Economic Report) echoes a new report from AEA, an industry trade group in Washington, that says the United States is falling behind other countries that are pouring more resources into technology education and development."

It's clear that our funding of science and technology is inadquate, and that our regulatory environment needs to be modified. Facts matter. Lamenting "liberal bias" isn't going to help. There's plenty of non-partisan things we can do to improve science funding and regulatory improvements.

It doesn't help that we have a republican goverment that thinks evolution, global warming and stem cell research are either hoaxes, or are evil.

I feel that the short sighted view of industry of recent years is to blame as well, pr perhaps the biggest culprit. They tend to only look ahead a year or less and if it does not return a profit in a short time they drop the funding for the research.

Are you serious with this Cypress? ROFLMAO

Are you serious with this Cypress? ROFLMAO

These were the conclusions of the World Economic Forum, and an important american Trade Industry Association: we are underfunding science and techology.

Who am I going to believe: Anonymous posert superfreak?

Or, the World Economic Forum and the AEA?

"I have read many articles over the last few years about our dropping investment in research, I guess you missed all of them ?"

Are you referring to government spending on R&D or government & private investment?

I posted the above once before US... please enlighten me to the points that I am wrong.
